Why a Small Load Still Hits a Minimum

A light load can still cost the minimum on the fee sheet because the visit, not the pounds, sets the floor. Read that line before you make a special trip for one box.

The visit has a floor

If the fee sheet lists a minimum, a very small load does not produce a tiny ticket. The scale math may be lower than the floor, and the floor is what you pay. That is the point of a minimum. It covers opening an account at the window and sending you to a bay. Read the sheet to see whether the minimum is per trip, per material, or per vehicle. Ask whether two small stops in one day are two minimums. Ask whether a bag program is the better path for a single sack. A scale minimum and a bag price are different products. Pick the one the sheet offers for your size of load.

Combining errands without mixing materials

If you already know you will hit a minimum, filling the allowed load with the same material can make the trip more useful, as long as you stay under what the vehicle and the site allow. Do not add a banned item or a different rate class just to feel the trip was worth it. Adding yard waste to trash can reclass the whole weight. Ask what you may add and still remain on the same line. Sometimes the honest answer is that a second material starts a second charge, so it belongs in a later trip or a bag program.

Decide before you drive

Call or read the sheet the day you go. If the minimum makes a one-box trip a poor use of the truck, store that box safely until you have a proper load of the same material, or use a bag or curbside option if one exists. Do not dump the box illegally because the minimum annoyed you. At the window, a small load should still be described accurately. The minimum is not permission to hide a second material. Keep the receipt so you can see the minimum line in print.

Before you go

  1. Read whether the fee sheet has a minimum and what it applies to.
  2. Ask whether a bag program fits a very small load better.
  3. Do not mix a second rate class into the trip just to fill the truck.
  4. Check the receipt for the minimum line before you leave.

Questions people ask

If my weight calculates above the minimum, do I still pay the minimum?

Then the weight calculation is usually the ticket, subject to the sheet. Ask the attendant to show which figure controlled. You should not pay the minimum on top unless the sheet says both apply.

Does a minimum apply to free recycling drop-off?

Sometimes recycling is a separate no-charge area and sometimes it is not available to out-of-area visitors. Read the sheet. Do not assume the trash minimum covers a recycling visit or the reverse.
