How a Trailer Can Change the Rate Class

A trailer can move you into a different fee-sheet class than a car with bags. Read the vehicle rules and ask before you rent the biggest trailer on the lot.

Vehicle type is sometimes a price category

Some fee sheets price a car with bags differently from a pickup, and a pickup differently from a trailer, a dump truck, or a roll-off. The distinction may be the capacity, the customer type, or both. Read the vehicle section of the sheet before you rent. Ask whether a small utility trailer still counts as a residential self-haul or whether any trailer is a different class. Ask whether a rented box truck is commercial by definition at that site. The rental contract will not answer the landfill's question. The fee sheet will.

Weight, minimums, and two units

A trailer plus a tow vehicle may be weighed together. Ask how tare works for that combination so you are not billed as if the empty trailer were waste. Ask whether the minimum applies once to the combination or once to each unit. Ask whether there is a length or weight limit that turns the visit into an appointment or a refusal. Showing up with a trailer the site cannot accommodate is an expensive way to learn the rule, even when you never hear a number in advance, because you may have to rent for another day.

Ask while the rental is still cancelable

Call the site with the trailer length and the material. Ask which rate class and which entrance apply. If the class is commercial and you are not set up as a commercial customer, choose a smaller vehicle or complete the paperwork first. At the gate, say you are towing a trailer and name the material. Confirm the class before you unhitch anything. If the attendant says the trailer is not allowed that day, you need to leave with it. Do not dump beside the entrance because the rental clock is running.

Before you go

  1. Read the fee sheet for vehicle or trailer categories.
  2. Call with the trailer size and material and ask which class applies.
  3. Ask how the tow vehicle and trailer are weighed for tare.
  4. Confirm the class at the gate before you unload.

Renting a large trailer and assuming it is billed like a car with three bags.

Questions people ask

Does a roof-loaded car count as a trailer?

No, but it may still violate a cover rule or a capacity rule. Ask about rooftop loads specifically. They are easy to refuse.

If I unhitch and leave the trailer, is the class different?

Do not unhitch to game the sheet. Ask the site how they classify a towed load. Follow that answer.

Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
