OpenStreetMap
Most listings come from OpenStreetMap, a map built by volunteers. We use waste transfer stations, recycling centers, named landfills that aren't marked as closed, hazardous waste disposal points, and recycling containers or stores tagged as taking batteries, paint, hazardous waste, electronics, motor oil or fluorescent bulbs. We keep tags such as name, operator, opening hours, fee, website, phone, address and accepted materials.

Michigan EGLE
For Michigan we use the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Materials Management open data: active Part 115 municipal solid waste and construction and demolition landfills, solid waste transfer facilities, registered compost facilities, active scrap tire processors and collection sites, and e-waste recyclers with a current registration. EGLE provides this information as a public service with no restrictions on its use. Michigan county pages also show EGLE's county household hazardous waste collection contacts (organization, address and phone only).
US EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP)
We use the LMOP landfill database (September 2024 release) for municipal solid waste landfills it lists as open. LMOP is a landfill gas database, not a consumer guide, so some of these landfills may only accept waste from haulers. We also use its list of closed landfills to filter closed sites out of the map data.
US Census Bureau
County boundaries (2023 cartographic boundary files) place each facility in a county. The 2023 Gazetteer files power ZIP code and city search. Census data is in the public domain.
Base map
Base map tiles come from Esri (Dark Gray Canvas and World Street Map), which credits sources including HERE, Garmin, USGS and OpenStreetMap contributors.

Known limitations
- Nothing is verified yet. Some sites may be closed, commercial-only or open to residents only.
- Hours, fees and accepted materials are only as complete as the sources, and most listings don't have them.
- Township and small rural drop-offs, seasonal yard waste sites and one-day hazardous waste collections are often missing from every source.
- "Open now" uses the listed opening hours and the site's approximate time zone. It ignores holidays and seasonal changes.
