Why a Mixed Load Is Billed Differently

A load that mixes materials can be priced as the higher class on the fee sheet. Sorting before you go is how you keep each material on its own line.

One pile, one rate class

Fee sheets often price yard waste, household trash, construction debris, and inert rubble on different lines. When those materials are mixed in one truck, the site may apply the highest line to the whole weight, may refuse the load, or may require you to sort on the ground. The posted sheet or the attendant will say which. There is no general right to an average price. If you want the yard-waste line, the load has to be yard waste. A few bags of trash on a brush trailer can change the ticket or send you away. Call and ask how mixed loads are billed before you combine projects.

What mixed means in practice

Painted wood in clean lumber, trash bags under brush, concrete in a sofa load, and a tire under drywall are all mixed loads. Staff inspect. Hiding the second material is not a discount. It is a reason for a rejected load or an extra line when the banned or higher-priced item is found. If you truly have two materials and the site allows a split, ask whether they can weigh out between bays or whether they want two trips. Some scales can do an intermediate weight. Many cannot on a busy day. Ask.

Sort in the driveway

Make separate piles and decide which trip you are on. If you can only make one trip, ask which single rate class will apply to the combination and whether you would rather leave one pile at home. At the window, describe every material, not the one you hope is cheapest. If the attendant names a class you did not expect, ask which sheet line they are using and what you would have to remove to qualify for a different line. Removing it before you unload is sometimes allowed. Decide with the load still on the truck.

Before you go

  1. Read the fee sheet lines for each material you actually have.
  2. Ask how a mixed load is classed before you combine piles.
  3. Sort in the driveway or plan separate trips.
  4. Describe the whole load at the scale and confirm the line before you tip.

Questions people ask

Will they weigh me between two bays?

Some sites can and some will not. Ask before you assume a split ticket is available that day.

Is a single nail in a board a mixed load?

Ask. Clean-wood programs often reject metal. A trash bay may not care. The strictness belongs to the pile you are trying to use.
