Why Refrigerant Appliances Are a Separate Line

Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners often appear on their own fee-sheet line because of refrigerant recovery. Read that line and do not cut the cooling system.

The line pays for a regulated step

A fee sheet may list refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers apart from ordinary scrap or trash. The separate line exists because refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician, not because the appliance is heavy. Read the sheet for that row and for any note about a tag or a certification. Call if you cannot tell whether a window unit and a full-size refrigerator share a row. Do not cut the line or vent the gas to dodge the appliance row. Venting is not a billing strategy. It is an illegal release and it can get the unit refused.

What to ask before you load the appliance

Ask whether the site recovers refrigerant or only accepts units that already have a recovery tag. Ask whether the posted appliance line applies in both cases or only one. Ask whether a dorm refrigerator, a dehumidifier, or a heat pump is on that line. A clothes washer usually is not, because it has no refrigerant circuit. Say the actual appliance. If the sheet has a different row for ordinary bulky appliances, you want the attendant to pick the correct one. Guessing wrong is how a washer gets held up and how a fridge gets mislabeled.

The receipt should name the appliance

When you arrive, declare the refrigerator or air conditioner before the rest of the load is classed. Ask which sheet line will be used. If recovery has already been done, bring the paperwork the site said it wants. If the site will not take the unit, you need a certified technician or a program that accepts charged units. Budget the trip around that answer, not around a hope that the appliance will hide in the per-ton trash weight. Keep the receipt.

Before you go

  1. Find the refrigerant-appliance line on the posted fee sheet.
  2. Ask whether the site recovers refrigerant or requires a prior tag.
  3. Do not cut or vent the lines.
  4. Declare the appliance at the gate and match the receipt to the sheet.

Questions people ask

Does a broken fridge still use that line?

If it contains a refrigerant circuit, assume yes until the site says otherwise. A unit that no longer cools can still hold a charge.

Are washers and dryers on the refrigerant line?

A standard washer or electric dryer is not a refrigerant appliance. Call them by name so the attendant uses the correct row.
