A tire line is usually a count
On many fee sheets the tire row is a per-tire charge, sometimes with a different row for tires on rims, oversized tires, or commercial tires. The weight of the tires may also be inside the load if they ride with other trash, or the sheet may say tires are pulled out and priced only on the count. You cannot know which until you read that sheet or call. Ask whether a passenger tire, a tire on a rim, and a truck tire are the same line. Ask whether there is a maximum number before the load is reclassed or refused. Do not invent a package price from memory.
The count happens at the window or the pile
Staff may count tires in the bed before you unload and again as they hit the ground. If your number and theirs differ, stop and look together. A tire buried under bags will still be counted, and hiding it can turn a simple count into a rejected load or a handling line. Declare the count when you pull on the scale. If you also have trash, ask whether the tire weight stays in the trash weight or is separated. That answer changes the ticket even when you never learn a dollar figure in advance.
Rims and water are billing details
A rim can move a tire to a different row or make it unacceptable in the tire pile. Water and mud inside a tire add weight if the load is weighed. Empty the water at home. Ask about rims before you demount anything, because some sites want the rim on and some want it off. If the sheet has a separate rim or wheel line, read it. At the window, ask for the tire line to be visible on the receipt so you can match the count you handed over.
Before you go
- Read the tire section of the fee sheet, including rims and oversize lines.
- Count the tires you loaded and empty standing water.
- Declare the count at the scale and ask how weight is handled.
- Watch the unload count and ask them to show the tire line on the receipt.
Assuming tires disappear into the per-ton price of the rest of the trash.
Questions people ask
Are bicycle tires on the same line?
Ask. Small tires are often a different item from passenger car tires. Do not assume the car-tire row applies.
What if I am over the posted maximum count?
Do not hide the extras. Ask whether you should leave them at home or whether another rate class exists. The maximum is a rule, not a suggestion.
