The City of Chesapeake says the weekday limits exist because the station got congested during the week, and small resident vehicles and trailers were ending up in unsafe spots around big commercial and city trucks. (One line on the city's page says no residents on Wednesday, but both its own table and SPSA's pages list Wednesday as open to Chesapeake residents; go with SPSA, or call to confirm.)
Commercial hours
Commercial customers can use the station Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Free disposal: the 12-visit rule
Residents of SPSA's service area get free disposal of household waste for up to 12 visits per calendar year at SPSA transfer stations. Bring proof of residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill. According to the City of Chesapeake, visits past 12 are charged $78 per ton with a $20 minimum.
Vehicles that qualify for free disposal
- Unmarked, unmodified cars, station wagons, SUVs and passenger vans with fewer than 15 seats (rental markings are OK)
- Pickup trucks of 1-ton capacity or smaller
- Utility trailers up to 12 feet long, owned or rented, with no visible tools or equipment, towed by one of the vehicles above
Not eligible for free disposal: box trucks and cargo vans (treated as commercial), pickups larger than 1 ton, vehicles with business markings, ladder or pipe racks or other modifications, and any vehicle SPSA judges to be used for business. Waste from rental properties doesn't qualify either. Loads that don't meet the rules pay the regular fee, with a $20 minimum.

- Yard waste: bag loose material like grass, leaves and mulch; limbs and brush must be under 6 feet long and no more than 6 inches thick
- Rigid items like fencing, pipe, timber and metal stock, within the same 6-foot, 6-inch limits
- Small amounts of concrete in small pieces
- Shingles (asbestos shingles go only to the Regional Landfill, by appointment)
- Used motor oil at the on-site drop-off
SPSA also asks that you not blow or sweep debris out of your truck or trailer onto the tipping floor.
Household hazardous waste and e-waste days
The Chesapeake station holds hazardous waste and electronics collection on the first Wednesday and third Saturday of every month, 9 a.m. to noon. SPSA allows residents unlimited HHW and e-waste trips each year with a driver's license or other proof of residence.
- Limits: 5 gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solids per day, and 5 electronic items per day
- Accepted: paint, automotive fluids, gasoline, antifreeze, batteries, pool chemicals, cleaners, pesticides, propane cylinders, fire extinguishers, TVs, computers, phones and most anything with a cord
- Not accepted: commercial hazardous waste and regulated medical waste
