I-66 Transfer Station hours
Trash, recycling and food scraps (residents): Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend access is a real plus compared with many county sites.

Holidays: the complex closes on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It closes early on Christmas Eve (1 p.m.) and New Year's Eve (2 p.m.). The county says other holidays follow regular hours.
Commercial customers have their own schedule, and the permit office is open weekdays during business hours.
Residency and payment
Fairfax County says proof of residency is required to dispose of trash here, and staff may ask for it. A driver's license, state ID, property tax bill or utility bill all work.
You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, major digital wallets, cash or check. The county's rate sheet notes that checks need a valid driver's license.

The county charges trash by the bag for small amounts or by weight for bigger loads. A "bag" means a standard 32-gallon bag or can.

A few details worth knowing:
- Brush flat rates only apply if the pile doesn't rise above the cab or stick out past the closed tailgate; otherwise you'll be weighed.
- Concrete, brick, dirt and similar debris is limited to about 2 cubic yards (four 95-gallon carts) per household per day, and toilets, sinks and tubs count here.
- More than 10 tires must be weighed, and weighed tire loads go to the county's I-95 Landfill Complex rather than I-66.
- You can ask to be weighed instead of paying by the bag; minimum fees still apply.
Don't skip the second weigh
When your load is priced by weight, you'll cross the scale loaded and again empty. If you leave without the empty weigh, the county estimates your vehicle's weight and bills you, and adds a $185 penalty if it has to take collection action.
What the I-66 Transfer Station recycles for free
Sorted recyclables cost nothing. The labeled recycling areas take:
- Aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles and jugs, glass bottles
- Mixed paper, cardboard, and milk and juice cartons
- Scrap metal
- Used motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries
- Cooking oil (take it to the hazardous waste area, never the motor oil tanks)
There are also blue textile bins for clothing, shoes and household fabrics, part of a county pilot with the company Helpsy.
Hazardous waste and electronics
During the hazardous waste hours above, residents can drop off common household chemicals such as pesticides, weed killers, oil-based paint and mercury items like thermometers and fluorescent bulbs, along with electronics like TVs, computers, game consoles, keyboards, speakers and cords. Propane tanks go to the hazardous waste area as well and carry a $15 fee. Commercial hazardous waste isn't accepted.
Free mulch
Fairfax County grinds the brush it collects into double-shredded mulch and gives it to residents for free. Check the county's free mulch page for current availability before you bring a truck.

The county asks everyone to follow staff directions, keep children and pets inside the vehicle, wear high-visibility clothing when walking around, stay off the phone while driving, take out earbuds, and stay out of operating areas.
Tips for a smoother visit
- Bag small loads to use the flat bag rates and skip the scale line.
- Plan hazardous waste trips around Wednesday, when that area is closed, and the noon start on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Seniors: the $10 rate for one or two bags is one of the better deals in the region.
- Separate brush and yard waste from trash; they're cheaper on their own.
