Weight shows up before the box looks full
A bundle of shingles is a dense unit. A few bundles can be a sensible load. A box stacked like a roof is not. Read the payload and count bundles before they go in, including tear-off that is already in bags. Wet tear-off is heavier. Call the site and ask whether asphalt shingles are accepted, whether they are a separate pile, and whether a rental truck may bring them. Some sites take a limited amount from a resident and handle a truckload differently. Ask that site. Do not copy a rule from a neighbor. Dumpmapper can help you find candidate facilities. The pin is not a yes, and it will not tell you which pile the shingles belong on.
Grit is the mess you bring home
Shingles shed mineral grit that sticks in wooden floorboards and in door tracks. Lay a cardboard liner you tape flat if you want to catch that grit, and take the liner out with the load. It is not a fix for a liquid spill, and it will not hold a punctured can. Bag or wrap loose tear-off so pieces do not fan across the bed. Keep the load low and against the cab. Do not screw boards to the floor to stop bundles from sliding. Use straps and the tie-downs the truck already has. A magnet sweep at the site finds nails the broom misses. Dump the magnet into a can and put that can in the pile you were assigned, not in your pocket.
Do not let one mixed bag set the visit
Sites often handle a whole load as the strictest material in it. A bag of shingles buried under household trash can make the visit a shingle load, or it can contaminate a shingle pile with trash. Keep them apart. Ask which bay is which, and unload only there. Sweep the grit at the disposal site. Ordinary dry sweepings go back in that bay, not into the rental lot and not into a storm drain. If the truck sits low before the box looks full, stop and leave the rest for a second legal trip. Do not shake leftover grit out on the street in front of the rental office either.
Before you go
- Ask the site whether shingles are accepted and whether they are a separate pile.
- Count bundles against the payload and keep the load low.
- Bag loose tear-off and tape down a liner you will remove at the site.
- Magnet-sweep nails and leave the grit in the assigned bay.

Questions people ask
Are shingles the same as ordinary trash?
Ask that site. Many places want roofing in its own area, and some limit how much a resident may bring. A rental truck can also change the vehicle class. Call about both the material and the truck. Do not assume a household-trash rule covers a roof.
What do I do with the grit in the tracks?
Glove up and pull it out at the dump, while you can still see it, and put it with the shingles or the trash as staff direct. A stone left in the track is what jams the door at the return. Do not blow the grit into the parking lot.
