Do Not Haul Gasoline in a Rental Truck

Gasoline, solvents, and pool chemicals go to a household hazardous waste program. Do not dump, burn, or evaporate them, and do not leave a can in the truck. A hot cargo box is a bad place for fumes.

The can does not ride with the junk

A gas can in a closed box is a fume and fire problem, and it is a banned item at many disposal sites. One can is enough to get a whole load turned around. Gasoline, solvents, parts cleaner, paint thinner, and pool chemicals belong at the household hazardous waste program that accepts them. Do not dump them on the ground, do not burn them, and do not leave a can open in the truck to evaporate. Do not hide the can under bags and hope the attendant does not see it. Call the hazardous-waste program for the path they use. Call the disposal site too if you are unsure whether a dried, empty container is a different item from a can that still sloshes. Those are not the same question.

The cab counts as the rental

A can in the footwell is still in the truck. Check under the seats, behind the passenger seat, and in the door pockets before you return. The cab is part of the rental, and a smell of fuel is not a clean return. If a can leaked, do not hose the carpet or the box floor into a storm drain or the street. Absorb what you can, bag the rags the way the hazardous-waste program tells you, and tell the rental counter what spilled. Hiding a fuel smell under a spray does not empty the can you forgot. Do not pressure-wash the engine bay to chase an odor. Water in the engine is damage. Cleanup of the cargo area is a broom and an honest report, not a wash bay you invent.

Sort it out before the rental day

The night before, walk the garage for gas cans, solvent cans, pool pails, and anything you cannot name. Those stay home until the hazardous-waste program can take them. A rental truck is not a storage shed for the pails, and a hot afternoon in a closed box makes fumes worse. If you find a can at the bottom of the load while you are unloading, stop. Do not kick it onto the trash floor. Ask the attendant where that item goes. If the site cannot take it, it leaves with you. Roadside dumping is not the backup. Ammunition, if you find that too, is not trash either. Call the police non-emergency line and ask how your town wants it turned in.

Before you go

  1. Take gasoline, solvents, and pool chemicals to household hazardous waste.
  2. Do not dump, burn, or evaporate them in the truck or on the ground.
  3. Check the cab and the box so a can is not still aboard at the return.
  4. If one leaks, absorb it and tell the counter. Do not hose it into the street.

Leaving a gas can in the box or the footwell because the rest of the load looked legal.

Questions people ask

Is a little gasoline in an old mower the same problem?

Yes. Fuel in a tank or a can does not belong in a debris load. Empty equipment the way the hazardous-waste or recycling program tells you, not by dumping or evaporating it in the driveway. Ask before you load the mower. Do not tip it out on the rental floor.

What if the site has a household hazardous waste day?

Use that program for gasoline, solvents, and pool chemicals. Confirm what they accept before you go, and keep those items out of the rental box in the meantime. Do not mix them into trash bags to save a trip. A mixed bag can turn the whole load around.
