Water is the hidden weight
A bag of dry leaves is awkward. A bag of wet leaves is a weight you feel in your back and in the axle. Brush that sat in the rain does the same thing, and it drips into the floor seams of a box truck long after you thought the load was stable. Call the site and ask whether yard waste is accepted, whether it must be separate from trash, and whether a rental box is a vehicle they want for brush. Many convenience centers would rather see an open pickup or a trailer they can direct to a brush area. Dumpmapper can show candidate sites. A pin is not permission. Ask which entrance brush uses, because it is often not the household stall.
Why an open bed is kinder to the rental
An open pickup or trailer lets you sweep leaves out in daylight and bag what the site wants bagged. A closed box hides wet clumps at the nose and smells like a compost pile on the return. If you do use a box, bag the wet material so juice does not soak the plywood. Do not hose the box out afterward. Blot a wet spot. Ordinary dry sweepings, once the load is out, go back to the disposal site, not into a storm drain and not into the rental lot. Leaves stuck in the door seal will keep the door from latching. Pick them out. Forcing the latch bends it. Sticks in the track derail the door later. Glove up and pull them at the site.
Sort before you lose the first pile
If brush, metal, and trash go to different places, load the yard waste at the door. Last on, first off. Do not bury a few bags of trash under a wall of branches and then discover you cannot reach them. Ask about thorns and logs. A site may want limbs cut to a length you should hear from them, not invent. Do not dump ash, even cold ash, into the brush pile unless they said ash is accepted. Hot coals do not go in the truck at all. They start floor fires. Never bag hot coals, and do not dump ash in the rental lot. Check the tires for thorns before you leave the brush area.
Before you go
- Ask the site where yard waste goes and whether a rental box is accepted.
- Prefer a pickup or trailer you can sweep, and bag wet leaks if you use a box.
- Load yard waste at the door if it unloads at a different pile from trash.
- Pull sticks from the tracks at the site and do not hose the floor.

Questions people ask
Can wet leaves go in the same bags as kitchen trash?
Only if that site accepts them together. Many do not. A mixed bag becomes the stricter pile or gets turned around. Ask, and use a different bag or a piece of tape so you can see which is which at the bay.
The box smells like leaves after I swept. Is that clean?
Smell is leftover debris or a wet pad. Find it and remove it at the disposal site. A spray on top of a hidden clump is not a clean return. Air the doors while you are still outside. Do not leave wet blankets in the closed box.
