The two sites
- North Kent Recycling & Waste Center, 2908 Ten Mile Road, Rockford. Per the North Kent page, it's open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday. Trash is compacted and trucked to a landfill. It also takes single-stream recycling and has the county's foam (Styrofoam) drop-off.
- South Kent Recycling & Waste Center, 10300 South Kent Drive, Byron Center. The South Kent page says it has the county's only active municipal solid waste landfill, and it takes cardboard only for recycling.
Both take appliances, tires, scrap metal, electronics and compressed gas tanks, and both host SafeChem household hazardous waste drop-off. The phone number is 616-632-7920. Closing times are exact: anyone still unloading after close pays $45 for each 15 minutes.
Checked October 2026. Hours, fees, residency rules and accepted items change, sometimes with little notice. Call the site or check its official page before you load up.

The bottom line
Arrive well before closing, and keep loads under 1,400 pounds to stay on the flat rate. See why a small load still hits a minimum.
Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
