How to Dispose of Pumpkins After Halloween

After Halloween, millions of pumpkins go to landfills. Here's how to keep yours out, and the one mistake that gets a pumpkin rejected.

Pumpkin drop-off programs

Some areas run seasonal collections. The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District in Ohio lists its 2026 pumpkin composting collection for October 30 to November 10 at nine drop-off sites. It accepts intact and decaying pumpkins, carved jack-o'-lanterns and gourds. It doesn't take bleached, treated or painted pumpkins, ones drawn on with permanent marker, or plastic and bags. Search your county's recycling site for a similar program.

Checked October 2026. Rules for this item vary by city and county, and fees and accepted items change. Check your local solid waste or household hazardous waste page, or call the site, before you haul.

Composting at home

Cuyahoga's tips: remove seeds if you don't want them sprouting, and take off decorations and stickers. Scrape off any paint or marker, then cut the pumpkin into pieces so it breaks down faster. EPA's home composting page covers balancing greens and browns.

Yard waste and food waste programs

If your city collects yard waste or food scraps, ask whether pumpkins count. Some programs take them and others don't. Durham, NC charges by the bucket for food waste drop-off: the first 5-gallon bucket is free, then $1 for each additional bucket. Yard waste is often priced lower than trash at the dump. See yard waste priced apart from trash and the yard waste guide.

Before you toss it

  • Pull out candles, LED lights, wire and plastic.
  • Painted, glittered or sealed pumpkins go in the trash unless your program says otherwise.
  • Rotting pumpkins collapse, so carry them in a bin, not a bag you'll need to empty.
