How Holiday Closures Usually Work

Holiday schedules are local. Some sites close the holiday, some close the observed weekday, and some change the surrounding days. Ask about the specific date you need instead of guessing from a calendar.

There is no national dump holiday clock

A holiday on a Monday may close a site on Monday, on the Friday before, or not at all if the site does not observe that day. An observed holiday and a calendar date can differ when the holiday falls on a weekend. Call and name the date you planned to haul. Ask whether that date is open to your customer type and whether the hours differ from a normal week. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city for the listing, and remember listings can be out of date. A general holiday note on a map is a prompt to call, not a schedule you can trust without the site.

Ask about the days around the closure

The useful questions are the day itself, the day before, and the day after. Also ask whether a delayed route or a full container the day after a closure will change a convenience center. If you use a hauler, ask whether their crews observe the same day the site does. A hauler who works while the site is closed may reschedule you. Read the posted fee sheet only if someone claims the holiday changes the rate. Believe a rate change only when the sheet or the attendant says so. Do not invent holiday pricing.

Move the work, not the waste

If the date is closed, pick another confirmed date and keep the waste secured at home or in the container you are allowed to use. Do not leave it at the gate the evening before because you will be busy. If a listing still shows regular hours through a holiday the site says it will close, send a correction after you have the site's answer, and include the date you were told. Next season, ask again. Holiday schedules are rewritten. Last year's note is a memory, not a permit.

Before you go

  1. Name the exact date and ask whether that site is open to you.
  2. Also ask about the day before and the day after.
  3. Ask your hauler whether they follow the site's closure.
  4. Reschedule and keep the waste secured if the answer is closed.

Arriving on a holiday Monday because the map still showed an ordinary Monday.

Questions people ask

Are the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas always closed?

No. Treat those as questions about specific dates. Ask the site. Some operate, some close, and some shorten the day. There is no universal pattern you can copy.

Will a voucher day replace a holiday closure?

Only if the program says so. Ask. Do not assume a makeup day exists. Get the replacement date from the site or the program before you load.

Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
