Hours and holidays

Both public use areas are open every day from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. They close on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and they also stay closed whenever the county closes for bad weather.

Fees

  • Household trash: $5 per trip, which covers up to 4 tires
  • Extra tires: $5 each, with a maximum of 6 tires per trip
  • Ticket book: 10 tickets for $45, each good for one trip
  • Appliances with refrigerant (refrigerators, air conditioners and similar): an extra $20 each
  • Recycling and yard waste: free

Who can use them

The public use areas are for residential waste only. A current driver's license showing a Henrico address is what staff accept as proof that you live in the county.

Waste from rental properties, vacant lots, businesses and other commercial work is treated as commercial and is not accepted. Commercial yard waste is refused as well, because of limited space.

What they take

  • Household trash from your primary Henrico residence
  • Recyclables at the recycling center
  • Yard waste, kept free of plastic, paper and trash so it can be ground into mulch
  • Tires, at the tire trailer
  • Used motor oil and antifreeze, in the tanks at the recycling center
  • Oil-based paint, gasoline and thinners, in the used paint area
  • Car and other lead-acid batteries, at the recycling center
  • Hot ashes and cinders, in the hot ash container
  • Propane tanks and fire extinguishers (ask staff where to put them)

What stays out of the trash containers

The county asks that these never go into the regular trash containers, and points each one to its own area:

  • Asbestos-containing material, which is not accepted at all and must go to a landfill permitted for it
  • Hot ashes or cinders
  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Propane tanks, fire extinguishers and other pressurized tanks
  • Motor oil and antifreeze
  • Oil-based paint, gasoline and thinners
  • Tires

Free mulch

Both sites give away mulch made from the yard waste residents bring in. You can load it yourself, or staff may load your pickup or trailer for free when equipment and people are available.

Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
