What the centers take, and the limits
- Household trash and bulky items such as furniture and appliances
- Recyclables
- Auto fluids and solvents: oil, filters, antifreeze, gasoline
- Small amounts of home repair and remodeling debris, only if it fits in a 55-gallon can or bag
- Mattresses, box springs, futons and foam toppers at Courthouse and Montpelier only, limit two per day
- Brush at Mechanicsville only: up to 4 inches thick and 6 feet long, about what fits securely in a low-sided pickup, and no bamboo
Loose demolition debris is not accepted at the centers. It goes to the Route 301 Transfer Station and is charged.
Route 301 Transfer Station
The transfer station at 7301 Courtland Farm Road is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It takes credit cards, debit cards and checks, but no cash. It closes for New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
It accepts commercial trash, grass, leaves, brush and logs up to 12 inches thick and 6 feet long, electronics and tires, all with a charge. Residents get a few exceptions: no charge for grass, leaves and brush up to 4 inches across in a pickup-sized load, and no charge for up to 4,000 pounds of household waste a year in an oversized vehicle with a Public Works permit. Loose construction debris, shingles, drywall, long lumber and bigger logs are chargeable. The county does not post the rates online, so call 804-365-3220 for current prices.

Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
