The Groton Transfer Station is the Town of Groton, Connecticut's drop-off at 685 Flanders Road, run by the town's Department of Public Works. It's built for bulky waste and special items, not weekly trash: household garbage and recycling aren't accepted at all, because those go out with your curbside hauler. What it does take, from brush and furniture to tires, electronics and mattresses, it takes only from Groton residents, with a permit sticker or a day pass.

Groton Transfer Station hours
The station is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's closed Sunday through Tuesday. For holiday closures, the town asks you to call the info line at (860) 448-4083. (The town noted, for example, that the station closed on Saturday, July 4, 2026.)
Residents only, and no businesses
The town reserves the transfer station for Groton residents disposing of bulky waste from their own Groton home. Commercial waste isn't allowed, and the town draws the line broadly: any person or business that accepts payment for the work, such as a contractor, landscaper or junk hauler, is considered commercial and can't use it. Proof of residency is required.
Permits for September 2026 to August 2027
Annual permits for fiscal year 2027 run from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2027.

New this year, permits are stickers that must go on the inside of the driver's-side windshield of the vehicle they were bought for. They can't be transferred. Each household can buy up to two permits, and both are charged the full applicable fee. Discounts can't be combined.
Where to buy
- In person at the Public Works office in the Town Hall Annex, 134 Groton Long Point Road, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your current vehicle registration, proof of residency, and proof of age or military status if it applies.
- By mail to Town of Groton Public Works, Transfer Station Permit Sales, 134 Groton Long Point Road, Groton, CT 06340. Include a copy of your registration, proof of residency, a check made out to "Town of Groton" and your phone number.
The town accepts cash, check or credit card. Card payments carry a 3.95% processing fee, with a $2.50 minimum, and payment apps aren't accepted.
Day passes
Don't need a full year? Buy a day pass for $20 at the transfer station, good for a car or pickup with a load of 3 cubic yards or less. If you then buy an annual permit within 30 days, the town credits that one $20 pass toward it.
Larger vehicles pay $50 per trip:
- Modified trailers of 10 or 12 feet
- Dump trucks under 3 cubic yards
- Cube or step vans
- Box trucks
- Trailers longer than 12 feet
Every load is capped at 3 cubic yards, no matter how the vehicle got that capacity, including sideboards and racks.
What's free (no permit needed)
The town accepts these at no charge:
- Mattresses and box springs, up to 2 sets
- Tires, up to 4 per trip (the town stopped charging for passenger and light-duty truck tires because of a tire Extended Producer Responsibility program)
- Electronics such as TVs, computers, media players and phones, 7 units or fewer
- Scrap metal, including microwaves
- Leaves, loose or in paper bags
- Used motor oil, oil filters and antifreeze
- Car, lead-acid and rechargeable batteries; unbroken fluorescent bulbs
- Strained cooking oil
- Books, and dry, mold-free clothing and textiles
- Pallets; boat shrink wrap (April through June)
- Empty grill propane tanks
- Lawn mowers and gas equipment drained of fluids (staff can drain them for $5)
- American flags and eyeglasses
What needs a permit or pass
- Bulky waste: construction debris, furniture and oversized household goods
- Brush
Items should be no longer than 4 to 6 feet.
Appliance fee
Appliances cost $15 each: refrigerators and freezers, stoves and ovens, washers and dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and humidifiers, heat pumps, and fluorescent or mercury-vapor light fixtures.

Free reuse
Residents can shovel their own free wood chips, mulch and leaf compost (first come, first served), take pallets, and browse the Give & Take shed. These are the only areas where you're allowed to take things home; everything else left at the station becomes town property.
Tips for a smoother visit
- Sort by material before you go. The town requires separating your load by commodity.
- Stick your permit on the windshield; it isn't valid otherwise.
- Measure your load. Three cubic yards is the limit for everyone.
- Drain mowers at home or pay $5 to have staff do it.
