What's free
Residential amounts of commingled recycling, cardboard, white goods (large appliances), scrap metal, cooking oil and textiles are free. The first 5-gallon bucket of compostable food waste is free, and each additional bucket is $1. Five or fewer tires off the rim are free from individuals. Otherwise, tires without North Carolina certification are $100 a ton, and tires mixed into other waste add $6 each. Electronics can be dropped off free.
The household hazardous waste center is free for Durham city and county residents. It takes paint, gasoline, pesticides, cleaners, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and mercury thermometers. It doesn't take ammunition, medications, sharps or smoke detectors. See what counts as household hazardous waste.
Rules that cost extra
- Uncovered or unsecured load: $20
- Banned items in a load: double the charge
- Drain all fluids from lawn equipment, and take the tires off riding mowers.
- Hand-unload at the convenience center. The tipping floor is only for hydraulic dump vehicles.

The bottom line
Bring a card and a helper, and pull up with the load covered. For more on what fees mean, see minimum fees vs. per-ton billing.
Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
