The address and the clock
Billings Public Works places Billings Regional Landfill at 5240 Jellison Road, Billings, MT 59101, phone 406-657-8285. Hours are Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed Sundays and on select holidays. Loads have to be secured. The city assesses an unsecured-load fee when a vehicle does not meet the secured-load policy. A tarp is not a suggestion if the bed is open. Holiday closures are the select holidays the city posts, so a Saturday of a long weekend is worth a phone call.
The small-load rule is different inside the city
The landfill page says there is no charge at the scale house for residential municipal solid waste when a City of Billings resident brings less than 1,500 pounds, and when a county resident brings less than 700 pounds. The fee table adopted for July 1, 2026 matches that split. City municipal solid waste, including construction and demolition in that table's note, is $35.15 a ton, and loads of 0 to 3.0 cubic yards or 0 to 1,500 pounds are no charge. Waste from elsewhere in Montana is $52.73 a ton, with the small-load column at $18.23. Out-of-state waste is $70.30 a ton, with the small-load column at $24.30. Those numbers are from the city's Schedule III as posted after the May 26, 2026 resolution. They are not a permanent law of nature.
Why a county resident still sees a landfill charge on a tax bill
The city notes that residential Yellowstone County customers are assessed a landfill fee on their annual tax statement, and that this is what allows loads under 1.5 cubic yards or 700 pounds to come in at no additional charge. A county resident who is over that size pays the Montana-outside-Billings rate, not the city rate. A city resident over 1,500 pounds pays the city per-ton rate. Bring ID that shows where you live. Guessing that every Billings-area pickup is free is how a small remodeling load becomes a scale ticket. Read the resolution page if your load is commercial, because the residential no-charge line is not a hauler account.
Before you go
- Go to 5240 Jellison Road and secure the load.
- Know whether the driver is a city resident, a Yellowstone County resident, or from out of state.
- Expect no scale charge only inside the city's small-load limits for that residency.
- Re-read Schedule III if your trip is after the next fee resolution.
Assuming a county resident gets the same 1,500-pound free allowance as a city resident. The city's page sets the county small-load line at 700 pounds.
