Inspection protects the pile and the people
A transfer station or landfill is not a place where anything in a truck becomes legal. Staff look for materials the site cannot bury or grind, such as cylinders, liquids, hazardous products, and items the fee sheet prices separately. They also look for mixed loads that would contaminate a compost pile or a clean-wood grinder. The look over the bed rail is the inspection. Sometimes they ask you to uncover a corner or to pull a bag aside. That is part of the visit. Hiding a tire or a can of solvent is not clever. It is the reason the next inspection is slower for everyone.
Make the load easy to see
A tarp comes off when they ask, not before you are parked if the wind will scatter the load. Do not stack a solid wall of boxes that exists only to hide the middle. If something embarrassing is in the load, name it first. A honest description lets them tell you to take one item home while the rest proceeds. A discovery after you said the truck was only household trash can mean a handling line, a rejection, or both. Read the fee sheet for how discovered banned items are treated, and read the banned list before you leave home.
Stay put until they wave you on
During the inspection, stay in the vehicle unless they ask you to get out. Shut the engine off if they ask. Do not unload while they are still looking. If they set an item aside, ask whether you take it home or they will handle it. Follow that answer. If you disagree, ask which posted rule applies, and ask before the material is on the ground. Once you are waved on, go to the bay they named. The inspection is over only when they say it is over.
Before you go
- Pack the load so a banned item is not hidden under other debris.
- Tell the attendant about tires, appliances, liquids, and anything you are unsure of.
- Wait through the inspection and uncover the load when asked.
- Take home anything they will not accept.

Questions people ask
Can I refuse an inspection?
Expect to be turned around if you do. The inspection is a condition of using the site. Ask to see the rule if you want it in writing.
Do they inspect recycling the same way?
They can. A recycling container with trash in it is still a problem. Follow the preparation rules for that material.
