No Scavenging at the Working Face

Material on the pile belongs to the site's operation. Do not pull scrap, lumber, or odd finds back off the working face.

The pile is not a store

Once material is unloaded, it is in a work area with loaders, compactors, and unstable footing. Sites prohibit scavenging because people get hit, because the material may be contaminated, and because the site, not the visitor, controls what happens next. Do not climb down to rescue a board you liked. Do not follow a loader to pick metal. Do not let a passenger hop out and shop the recycling containers that are marked for staff or for a different program. If a reuse area exists, it will be signed and it will have its own rule. Use that area only as posted.

Your own load is the exception you arrange

If you dropped something you did not mean to, tell the attendant immediately and ask whether you may retrieve it. Sometimes they will say yes while it is still at the edge and you can reach it from the floor. Sometimes they will say no because the loader has already pushed it. Accept the no. A phone, a license, or a tool that went over the edge is a reason to ask. It is not a reason to climb. Staff have a procedure, and the procedure does not include customers on the working face.

Do not bring a pile home from the gate

Taking material from a scavenging-prohibited site can be treated as theft and always as a safety violation. Do not load someone else's discarded appliance back onto your truck on the way out. If you want used building materials, use a reuse store or a program that offers them. The exit lane is for leaving. If you see unsafe scavenging by someone else, tell staff rather than joining or confronting the person beside a loader.

Before you go

  1. Unload and leave the pile alone.
  2. Ask staff immediately if you drop something you must try to recover.
  3. Use only a signed reuse area, and only under its posted rule.
  4. Do not load other people's discarded items on the way out.

Questions people ask

Is scrap metal in an open container fair game?

No, unless a sign specifically allows public recovery. Ask. An open top is not an invitation.

What about items still in my own truck?

Those are still yours until you unload them. Once they are on the pile, ask staff before you try to take anything back.

Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
