Where to Stand When the Cargo Door Opens

Stand beside the cargo door, not in front of it. Bags shift on the ride and fall toward the opening. Open the door slowly and let the pile show you what is leaning before you step into the doorway.

The doorway is where the load wants to fall

A box that looked tidy at home settles on the drive. Bags lean on the door. A mattress that was strapped works a strap loose. When the latch lets go, that weight moves toward the opening. If you are standing in front of the door, you are the landing spot. Stand to the side, one hand on the strap, feet out of the swing. Open a little, look, then open more. The first few inches tell you whether a bag is pressed against the panel. If it is, pause and have a second person hold the top item before you give it the rest of the opening. Rushing the door is how a simple unload starts with someone on the ground.

The ramp and the door are a pair

If the truck has a ramp, set it on firm ground before you commit to a full open, and keep people off to the side while it drops. Do not stand below a steep ramp when a sofa is about to come down. The person guiding should be beside the truck, not behind it in the blind spot. Children and pets do not belong in the cargo box or loose on the floor. Follow the site's posted rule about where they wait. Attendants usually will not climb into the box to catch a falling bag. That catch is your job, from the side, with a clear place to step. If the pile looks unstable, close the door partway and restack before you carry anything out.

Open only in the stall you were given

Do not pop the door in a queue, under a low canopy, or beside a lane of moving trucks. Ask which bay a rental uses, then open there. A map pin is not the bay. Dumpmapper can point you at candidate sites, and the phone call tells you which entrance takes a box truck. Once the door is open, unload and move. A long pause with the door open blocks the stall. When you are done, clear the threshold and close the door before the truck rolls. Look beside you, not only in the mirror, so a helper is not still in the opening when you pull ahead. Call that site before you trust a listing for the stall.

Before you go

  1. Stand beside the door and open it a few inches before you commit.
  2. Set the ramp on firm ground and keep people off the downhill side.
  3. Restack if the pile leans, then unload in the stall you were shown.
  4. Clear the threshold and close the door before the truck moves.

Questions people ask

What if a bag falls as soon as the latch moves?

Step back to the side. Do not grab from the front while more of the pile is still coming. When the movement stops, pick up what fell and put it in the assigned bay. Then look at the rest of the stack before you open the door the rest of the way.

Can the attendant hold the door?

Do not expect floor staff to climb in or to stand in the fall line. Ask where to park, then handle the door yourself or with a helper you brought. Keep that helper beside the truck, where the driver can see them, not behind the bumper.

Car bays and truck bays are often different. Stop at the window and ask which stall a rental box should use. Guessing puts a long truck in a lane that is too small and blocks everyone behind you.
