The Scale Ticket for a Rental Truck

The scale ticket records that visit. Keep it until the rental return is finished, in case the site or the rental company asks what the truck was doing. The ticket is not a receipt that the box was cleaned.

The ticket is about the visit, not the cleanup

A scale ticket, when the site uses one, ties the truck to that crossing. It may show a time, a weight, and a material description the clerk entered. Keep it in the cab, not in a bag you are about to throw away. You may need it if the gate asks you to prove you finished, or if the rental company asks where the truck went. It does not prove the floor is empty. A photo of a swept box does that job. It also does not set a national price. Whatever number is printed is that site's charge for that load. Do not quote it as the fee another town will use, and do not invent a fee the ticket does not show.

Read it before you drive off the scale

Look at the material line. If you told them household trash and the ticket says something else, ask before you leave the window. A wrong description can send you to the wrong bay. Look at whether the ticket expects you to weigh out. Some sites want a second crossing when the truck is empty. If you skip it, the visit is not finished even though the box is. Ask how a rental is weighed, because a default empty weight may not match your truck. Do not argue a loaded truck into a banned bay because you already have paper in your hand. The ticket admits you to the path they named. It is not permission to pick a different pile.

Store it until the return is done

Put the ticket with the rental contract. Both answer the question of who had the truck and what it was doing. Photograph the ticket in case the paper gets wet. At the rental counter, you usually will not be asked for it, and you still want it if a question comes up later that day. Do not hand the only copy to a helper who is leaving in another car. After the truck is checked in and the box has been seen empty, you can file the ticket with your own records. It still is not a cleaning certificate. If the box was dirty, the ticket will not talk the counter out of that fact.

Before you go

  1. Keep the scale ticket in the cab, separate from the trash bags.
  2. Read the material line and ask about a weigh-out before you leave.
  3. Photograph the ticket so a wet copy is not your only record.
  4. File it with the rental contract until the return is finished.

Throwing the scale ticket into the bay with the bags and then having no record of the visit.

Questions people ask

Does a ticket mean the rental company was paid?

No. The rental company does not pay the disposal site for you. The ticket is between you and that site for that visit. Budget the site charge you confirm on that site's sheet, plus the rental and fuel. There is no national disposal price hiding on the rental contract.

What if the site does not use a scale?

Then there is no ticket. Ask what record they do give you, and keep that paper or note the time you were there. You still photograph the empty box. A missing scale does not mean the load was free, and it does not mean every site works the same way. Call the one you are using.
