Using a Hand Truck for Self-Haul

A hand truck moves a strapped box or appliance across flat ground. It does not replace a helper on stairs or a ramp plan at the truck.

Strap the load to the frame

A hand truck or appliance dolly works when the item is strapped to the frame, the wheels match the ground, and the weight is one you can tilt without the truck flipping you. Slide the nose under the item, tip back until the weight is over the wheels, and keep a hand on the handle the whole way. A loose refrigerator that is only leaning will walk off the nose plate at the first crack in the sidewalk. Use the strap. For a stack of boxes, stack only as high as you can see over, and strap the stack. A tall unstrapped stack falls backward onto you.

Stairs and gravel are the limits

Most hand trucks are for flat pavement and a curb you can ease down, not for a flight of stairs. Stair climbers exist and still need practice and a second person. If your path is stairs, plan a different tool or more people before you load the dolly. Gravel, mud, and a tipping-floor surface full of debris stop small wheels. At the site, ask whether you may wheel across the bay or whether staff want you to unload from the vehicle only. Do not push a dolly behind a loader. If the wheels sink, stop and get help. Do not jerk the handle until you are the thing that falls.

Stow it so it does not become debris

The hand truck rides strapped in the bed, not loose to tumble into your legs at a stop. At the bay, set the brake or chock the vehicle before you wheel anything off a ramp. When you are done, put the dolly back on the vehicle before you move. A dolly left on the floor becomes the site's problem and your missing tool. If the appliance contains refrigerant, the dolly changes nothing about recovery. You still need a certified technician. You are only solving the roll, not the coolant.

Before you go

  1. Strap the item to the hand truck and keep the stack low enough to see over.
  2. Use it on flat ground, not as a stair tool unless it is built and crewed for stairs.
  3. Ask before you wheel across the tipping floor.
  4. Stow the dolly before you move the vehicle.

Questions people ask

Is a furniture dolly the same tool?

A flat furniture dolly is for items you can tip onto it and strap. It is even less happy on gravel. Match the dolly to the piece and the ground.

Can one person do an appliance alone with a dolly?

Sometimes on flat ground, and not on stairs. If you cannot control the tilt, wait for a second adult.
