Unloading Without Blocking the Bay

Other people are waiting behind you. Unload in the marked spot, keep a path for the loader, and move as soon as the truck is empty.

Park where the spotter can still work

When you enter the bay, look for the marker, the painted line, or the spotter's hand. Set the vehicle so the back is at the pile and the cab is not sticking into the travel lane. Leave room for the loader to reach the pile. If you box the machine in, everyone waits, and the operator may tell you to move before you have thrown a single bag. Ask where to stand if it is not obvious. A first visit is allowed to be slow. It is not allowed to invent a parking spot in the middle of the floor.

Unload in an order, not a scatter

Start with the items at the back. Put them in the pile, not in a fan across the lane. Break down boxes only if staff told you to. If a piece is too heavy to place, ask before you drop it at an angle that blocks the next truck. Keep your body out of the traffic side. Do not walk behind someone else's trailer to borrow space. If you need a tool from the cab, tell the person behind you that you are not done. Silence looks like you abandoned the truck.

Close up and leave the lane

When the bed is empty, close the tailgate or ramp before you roll. A dragging ramp is a hazard and a delay. Check that you still have your gloves, phone, and paperwork. Follow the exit arrows to the outbound scale if you were told to weigh out. Do not stop in the bay to rearrange the cab. The next customer cannot back in until you are gone. If you dropped something in the lane, pick it up before you drive off. Courtesy at a busy site is mostly just finishing and moving.

Before you go

  1. Park on the marker the spotter or the sign indicates.
  2. Keep the travel lane and the loader's path clear.
  3. Place material in the pile instead of scattering it.
  4. Close the tailgate and exit as soon as the bed is empty.

Stopping in the middle of the bay to sort a week's mail from the passenger seat.

Questions people ask

What if the person behind me is honking?

Finish safely, do not rush a heavy lift, and leave as soon as the truck is clear. Honking does not mean you should throw debris into the lane.

Can I wait in the bay for a friend in another vehicle?

No. Meet outside the working floor. The bay is for unloading only.
