Sorting the Load in Your Driveway

The easiest place to sort is home. Separate materials before you drive so the scale house can send you to one bay with a straight answer.

Make piles that match real categories

Before the truck is loaded, put household trash, yard waste, metal, tires, and construction scraps in different piles. Pull out anything that belongs at a special program: solvents, gasoline, pesticides, refrigerant appliances that have not been recovered, sharps, medicine, ammunition, and fireworks. Those do not become acceptable because they are small. A first visit goes smoothly when the truck contains one category the site named. If you must bring two, keep them on opposite sides and tell the scale house. Ask whether two categories mean two trips.

Bag and label the confusing pieces

A box of mixed garage junk is where banned items hide. Empty the box in the driveway. Batteries, half cans of solvent, and old thermostats are easier to see on the ground than in a crushed carton. Bag trash so it cannot blow. Bundle branches only if the yard-waste rule allows bundles. Keep treated wood out of the branch pile. If you are unsure about a single object, leave it home and ask by phone. One mystery item can delay a whole first load.

Load in unload order

Put the first thing you need to remove at the back of the bed. If the site told you to visit the recycling containers before the trash bay, load recycling at the back. If you are weighed in and out, do not plan to pick up new material on the way. The driveway sort is also the moment to tarp the load and to check that the tailgate latches. A first visit should start with a closed, covered, honest load, not with a rescue sort on the tipping floor while people wait.

Before you go

  1. Sort the driveway into the categories the site actually uses.
  2. Remove hazardous items and anything you cannot name.
  3. Call about a mystery item before it rides with the load.
  4. Load the back of the bed with the first material you will unload.

Questions people ask

What if I only have a small mixed pile?

Ask the site whether mixed household trash is the right single category. If a piece is banned, it still has to come out. Small is not the same as allowed.

Can I sort in the parking lot at the site?

Only if staff tell you to use a staging area. The scale lane and the pit edge are not sorting tables.
