Storm Debris and Ordinary Disposal Rules

After a storm, special debris rules may appear for a limited time and a limited material. Until an official program says otherwise, ordinary site rules still apply. Confirm before you haul a downed tree to the regular bay.

Wait for the program instead of inventing one

Storm debris collection, when it exists, is announced by the local government or the site operator. It names dates, materials, and how to set material out or where to bring it. A neighbor's pile is not the announcement. Call the site and ask whether a storm program is in effect for your address and your material. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city to find the ordinary facilities, and remember listings can be out of date. A storm can close those facilities or change their hours. Confirm the same day you intend to move debris.

Keep storm material separate from daily trash

Programs often want vegetative debris apart from building wreckage and apart from household trash. Mixing them can disqualify a pile from a special collection and can break the ordinary rules too. Ask how they want it separated. Do not place debris in a travel lane. Do not assume a regular convenience center will take a trailer of limbs just because the limbs came from a storm. Ask. If the program excludes a material, that material still needs a legal outlet. Ask what that outlet is. Do not burn or dump the remainder because the program was narrow.

When the program ends, the old rules return

Ask when the special rules expire. After that, a limb is ordinary yard waste or ordinary refuse under the regular fee sheet and acceptance list. Hauling next month on last week's storm instructions is how people get refused. If a map listing was changed for the emergency, send a correction when the site says the change has ended, or note the end date if you were given one. Keep receipts if a program requires proof of disposal for insurance. The ticket is the record. A photo of the curb is not a disposal receipt.

Before you go

  1. Ask whether an official storm program covers your address and material.
  2. Separate materials the way that program or the ordinary site requires.
  3. Do not use a special rule before it starts or after it ends.
  4. Keep tickets if you may need to show the debris was disposed of legally.

Questions people ask

Can I take storm debris to any site in the county?

Only if that site says it is part of the program or it accepts the material under ordinary rules. Ask each gate. A county announcement may still limit the locations.

What if my debris includes something hazardous?

Tell the program exactly what it is and follow their direction. Do not hide it in a vegetative pile. Special materials stay special after a storm.

Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
