Do Not Leave Waste at a Closed Gate

A closed gate is not a drop-off. Waste left outside a fence, in a ditch, or in front of a sign is still your waste, and it can be investigated as dumping. Take it back.

Closed means take it with you

If the gate is locked, the hours have ended, or staff wave you off, the legal act is to leave with the load. Bags stacked at the entrance create a hazard, attract more dumping, and can be traced. Sites use cameras and staff know what arrived at closing. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city if you need another candidate, and remember listings can be out of date. Call the next site before you drive. Do not convert a frustrating afternoon into a pile on public property. The fee you hoped to avoid is smaller than the problem you create.

What to do instead

Re-secure the load so nothing blows out on the way home. Store it where animals and rain will not spread it, and where local rules allow you to keep it until a confirmed opening. If the waste is from a job that cannot return home, ask the site what holding arrangement is legal. A business dumpster is not legal unless that business told you to use it. A charity bin is not a trash can. If you already left something and you can safely retrieve it, retrieve it and call the site to ask how they want the mistake corrected. If you cannot retrieve it, call and tell them rather than hoping it blends in.

Report dumping you did not cause

If you arrive and a pile is already at the gate, do not add to it and do not sort through it. Note the time and use the reporting contact the site or the local government publishes. Give facts, not a theory about who did it. Then continue with your own confirmed plan. Reporting is how the operator keeps the site usable. Joining the pile because it was already started is how a closure gets longer.

Before you go

  1. If the gate is closed or staff turn you away, leave with the waste.
  2. Re-secure the load and store it only where you are allowed to keep it.
  3. Call another site and confirm it before you drive there.
  4. Report a pile you find. Do not add to it.

Questions people ask

What if the gate is open but nobody is staffing the site?

Treat it as closed to unloading unless a posted self-serve rule says otherwise and you fit that rule. An open gate can mean staff are inside for other work. Call or read the sign. Do not wander in.

Can I leave waste just outside if I plan to pay in the morning?

No. Unattended waste at the entrance is not a reservation. Take it home or to a confirmed open facility. Pay when you are actually received.
