Speed Limits and One-Way Site Roads

Site roads are work zones with posted speeds and one-way loops. Drive the posted site speed, follow the arrows, and do not use a scale as a turnaround.

The posted site speed is the speed

A number painted for that property is there because loaders, pedestrians, and stopping distances are different from the public road. Drive to the posted site speed even if the road looks empty. If no number is posted, drive slowly enough to stop for a person or a spotter and ask what they expect. Do not copy a speed from another facility. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city before you go, and remember listings can be out of date. The map will not show the internal arrows. Those exist only on the ground, and they control the visit.

One-way means one way

Arrows, cones, and the direction of the queue are the pattern. Do not turn against them to reach a container you passed. Loop around the way the site designed, or ask a spotter for the legal way back. Never turn around on a scale. Never back down a one-way lane because you missed a turn, unless a spotter is directing that move. If you meet an oncoming driver, stop and let staff untangle it. Two visitors inventing a solution is how fenders and people get hit.

The exit is part of the pattern

Outbound lanes can be one-way as well. Follow them even if a gap in a fence looks like a shortcut to the highway. A shortcut may be a haul road for equipment. When you are clear of the property, resume ordinary road rules. If you are uncomfortable driving the loop with a trailer, say so before you enter and ask whether that rig is allowed. Discovering the turn is too tight halfway around the loop is a bad time to improvise. The site can refuse a vehicle that cannot follow the road pattern safely.

Before you go

  1. Drive at the speed posted on that site, or slowly enough to stop if none is posted.
  2. Follow arrows and the queue. Do not drive against the pattern.
  3. Do not turn around on a scale or back down a lane unless directed.
  4. Ask before you enter if your rig may not handle the loop.

Using the scale as a turnaround because you passed the container.

Questions people ask

Can I follow a staff vehicle the other way?

Only if they tell you to. Staff vehicles may use roads visitors cannot. Follow signs unless a person directs you otherwise.

What if the arrow is knocked over?

Treat the road as unclear, go slowly, and ask. A downed sign is not an invitation to pick a direction. Tell staff the sign is down.
