Using a Rental Truck for Debris

A rental truck is a different vehicle than the car the site may be used to seeing. Confirm the site allows it, protect the bed, and learn the rental's load rules before you fill it.

Ask the site and the rental company different questions

The rental company will tell you what the truck may carry and whether debris is allowed under the contract. The disposal site will tell you whether that size of truck uses a particular gate, rate class, or appointment. Ask both. A truck that is legal on the highway may still be too tall for a low bay or too large for a resident lane. Get the height and the bed length from the rental paperwork and repeat them to the site. Ask whether a box truck is priced as a commercial vehicle even on a household errand. That answer changes the trip.

Protect the box and the cargo

Rentals often require a cover, a sweep-out, and a ban on leaking loads. Line the floor if you are hauling dirt, concrete, or anything wet. Strap tall items to the wall ties the truck provides. Do not drill or nail into the box. Distribute weight low and forward of the rear axle, and stop loading before the truck looks dramatically squat. A first visit in an unfamiliar vehicle is not the time to test the maximum. Close the roll-up door before you move. An open door will hit the bay or the scale house.

Plan the unload

A high box means you cannot toss bags from the ground. Bring a helper the site allows, or a ramp the rental permits, and gloves. At the site, tell the attendant it is a rental and you are new to it if you need a roomier bay. Ask where to stand so you are not backing blind toward the pit. Sweep the box before you return the truck. Debris left in a rental becomes a fee from the rental company, separate from the disposal ticket. Keep both receipts.

Before you go

  1. Ask the site whether your rental truck's size and class are allowed.
  2. Follow the rental contract on debris, covers, and cleaning.
  3. Load low and strapped, and close the door before you roll.
  4. Sweep the box out at the bay so you are not billed for leftover debris.

Questions people ask

Will the site weigh a rental with no license plate yet?

Ask. Temporary plates or paperwork may be required. Have the rental agreement in the cab.

Can I put yard waste and trash in the same box?

Only if the site said a mixed load is acceptable. A big empty box tempts people to combine piles. Call first.
