Newby Island Landfill (Milpitas)
Newby Island, at 1601 Dixon Landing Road, Milpitas, publishes public rates by the yard. Hours are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sunday. The Republic's Newby Island rate sheet (PDF) we found is dated July 1, 2025, so confirm it's still current. It lists:
- Trash: $73.50 per yard (1-yard minimum)
- Clean C&D, roofing and drywall with no trash: $69.50 per yard
- Demolition and hard-to-handle items, including sofas and mattresses: $76 per yard
- Per-item extras on top of yardage: car tire $37.50, Freon items $92, mattress set $65, TVs from $70
- An environmental fee of $19.71 per load, plus a fuel recovery fee on all loads
Yardage is based on the vehicle's or load's maximum capacity, whichever is greater, and all open loads must be tarped.
Which costs less?
It depends on how heavy the load is. Per-ton pricing favors bulky, light loads, and per-yard pricing favors heavy, compact ones. A pickup of light junk might weigh well under half a ton, while a yard of roofing weighs a lot more. Read why a cubic yard is not a ton and estimating cubic yards, then try both numbers in the dump fee calculator.

- AmazonCommercial heavy-duty 16-mil poly tarp: Covers the load so nothing blows out on the highway, and helps you avoid the uncovered-load fee many sites charge.
- Rhino USA 1-inch ratchet tie-down straps (4-pack): Holds the tarp and bulky items like furniture in place in a pickup bed or trailer.
- Wells Lamont 3300 leather-palm work gloves: Most drop-off sites are self-unload, so protect your hands from splinters, nails and sharp edges.
Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
