Reusing or Discarding Wood Pallets

A sound pallet may go back to a reuse loop. A broken one is wood waste only if it is not treated, stained, or mixed with plastic and cardboard.

Markings and condition matter

Many pallets can be repaired and reused, and some retailers will take their own pallets back. Ask the business that received the delivery. If you are stuck with them, look at the condition. A clean, dry, intact pallet is a reuse candidate. A pallet with a broken stringer, spilled chemical stain, or rot is disposal. Some pallets are treated or marked for treatment. If you cannot tell, do not burn the pallet and do not assume a clean-wood grinder will take it. Call the site, describe the stamp if there is one, and ask which pile accepts pallets.

Take off what is not wood

Cardboard slip sheets, plastic wrap, and nails sticking out at knee height should be dealt with before the haul. Film and cardboard follow their own recycling or trash rules. Do not leave a pallet wrapped in stretch film and call it wood. If you break a pallet down, watch for nail plates. Bag metal if the site sorts it. A whole pallet is often easier for a loader than a loose pile of boards, so ask whether they want them intact. Never cut a pallet apart on the tipping floor.

Do not use a pallet as a trash sled

People stack bags on a pallet and then throw the whole sled into the pit. That hides the materials and ruins any chance of wood recovery. If the site accepts pallets as wood, bring pallets. If you are disposing of trash, use bags or a bin and ask whether an empty pallet can ride along. At the bay, put pallets where staff point, flat and stable, not leaning against a railing. If they refuse stained or treated ones, load those back up.

Before you go

  1. Ask the original business whether it takes pallets back.
  2. If not, ask the disposal site about intact pallets and any treatment limits.
  3. Remove plastic wrap and cardboard before you haul.
  4. Unload pallets in the assigned wood or trash bay, still separate from bagged garbage.

Questions people ask

Are painted display pallets clean wood?

Usually not. Paint and printed panels can keep them out of a grinder. Ask. You may be sent to trash.

Can I drop pallets at a grocery after hours?

Only if that store told you to. Leaving a pile by a loading dock is dumping, not recycling.
