Pour it into a sealed jug, not onto the ground
Drain oil into a clean, leakproof container with a cap. A milk jug can work if you write USED MOTOR OIL on it and the plastic is compatible and sound. Do not use a container that held chemicals you cannot identify. Wipe spills. Do not pour oil down a drain, onto a gravel drive, into a storm grate, or into a trash bag. Do not burn used oil in a shop heater unless that heater is specifically approved for used oil and you are allowed to operate it. For a household, the normal path is a recycling collection, not a fire.
Find an oil collection before you drive
Many auto-parts stores and household hazardous waste programs accept used motor oil from residents. Call and ask about a container limit, whether they want the jug back, and whether filters are included. Oil filters are often a separate yes. Ask. Do not mix gasoline, antifreeze, solvents, or cooking oil into the same jug. A mixed jug can be refused and can ruin a recycling tank. If you already mixed fluids, say so before you pour. The attendant needs to know.
Arrive without a surprise leak
Set the jug upright in a bin so a bump cannot tip it. Keep it out of the passenger footwell if fumes bother the driver. At the collection point, pour only if staff ask you to pour, and use the funnel they provide. If they want the container left sealed, leave it sealed. Do not leave a jug of oil beside the trash bay at a transfer station that did not agree to take it. Take the empty, oily jug home or dispose of it as the program tells you. Wash your hands. Keep oily rags for the instruction the HHW program gives.
Before you go
- Drain oil into a sealed, labeled container and do not mix other fluids in.
- Call an oil recycler or HHW program and ask about limits and filters.
- Transport the jug upright in a bin.
- Hand it over as staff direct and take back anything they refuse.

Questions people ask
Can a little oil go in the trash if it is in a sealed bottle?
No. Take it to an oil collection or HHW program. A sealed bottle in a compactor still breaks.
What about the empty oil bottle from the new quart?
Ask the collection or the local recycling program. An empty bottle is a different item from a jug of used oil. Do not use it as a reason to throw the used oil away.
