Reading a Closed or Seasonal Listing

Closed can mean today, this season, or permanently. Read the words carefully, then call the site. A map status is a lead that goes stale.

Do not collapse every closed into one meaning

A listing may say a site is closed on particular weekdays, closed for the season, or no longer a public drop-off. Those are different facts. A seasonal convenience center may return. A permanent closure will not. Read the note beside the status and the date if one is shown. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city and open the specific listing. Listings can be out of date, so confirm with the site before you cancel a plan or, worse, before you drive there. If the listing and a sign on the gate disagree, believe what staff or the current gate sign say for today's decision, and send a correction.

Ask what to do with the load in the meantime

If the site is closed today, ask when it expects to receive your type of waste again and whether another facility in the same system is the right alternative. Do not assume the next pin down the road is the official backup. Call that next site too. If the closure is seasonal, ask where residents are supposed to go in the off season. Write the answer. If you already loaded the truck, take the waste home or to a confirmed open site. A closed gate is not a drop.

Use the listing as a question list

Seasonal sites often change vehicle rules or materials when they reopen. Ask again in the new season instead of replaying last year's visit. If a listing says temporarily closed and the phone is answered, ask what temporarily means. If the phone is dead and the gate is chained, do not squeeze a bag through. Send a map correction describing what you observed and the date, and find another confirmed outlet. Your waste is still your responsibility while the status is unclear.

Before you go

  1. Read whether the listing means closed today, closed for the season, or closed for good.
  2. Call the site and ask what a customer with your load should do now.
  3. Confirm any backup site separately before you drive.
  4. Correct the map if what you saw does not match the listing.

Leaving bags at a chained gate because the listing still showed last summer's hours.

Questions people ask

Can I visit on the first day a seasonal site reopens without calling?

You can, but you should call. Reopening day can bring a line, a new fee sheet, or a delay. Confirm the material and the vehicle the week you go.

What if the website and the map disagree about closed?

Call the site. Use whichever answer staff give you today, and report the stale listing so both sources can be fixed. Do not average them.
