Nothing Banned Left in the Cab

The cab is part of the rental. A gas can, a propane cylinder, or food waste in the footwell is still your problem at the return. Check under the seats before you call the truck empty.

Under the seat counts

People sweep the box and forget the cab. Boots track the landfill onto the mats. A bottle rolls under the seat. A glove holding ramp pins gets kicked into the footwell. None of that is a clean return, even when the cargo floor shines. The serious version is a gas can, a propane cylinder, or a bag of food you meant to throw away and then needed the cab space. Those items are still in the rental. Gasoline and solvents go to household hazardous waste. Do not dump, burn, or evaporate them. Propane cylinders stay upright with the valve closed until a program that accepts them takes them. Do not hide either one under the seat because the box was full.

Food, smell, and the mats

A forgotten lunch is enough to fail a clean return on a hot day. Check cup holders, door pockets, and the wheel wells of a van. Bag food waste and take it to the trash disposal, not to the rental company's dumpster. Their dumpster is for their office waste. Then shake the floormats. Do not beat a chemical-looking dust out into the storm gutter. Ordinary dry dirt from your boots can go back to the disposal site in the last trash bag you saved for sweepings. If the mats smell like solvent or fuel, tell the counter. A spray on top of the smell is not a cleaning. Air the doors while you are still outside, after the banned items are out and headed to the right place.

Papers stay, debris does not

The contract, your license, and the residency proof should still be on the seat when you finish. Do not pack them into a bag you throw on the floor. A clean cab means no trash, not an empty glove box. Look high and low with the dome light on. A strap end under the pedal is both litter and a driving hazard. If you find ammunition while you are checking the cab, stop. Ammunition is not trash. Call the police non-emergency line and ask how your town wants it turned in. Sharps, if you find those, stay in an approved container. Medicine uses a take-back. Neither one belongs in the footwell or on the tipping floor.

Before you go

  1. Check under the seats, in the pockets, and in the footwell before you return.
  2. Take fuel cans and propane cylinders to the programs that accept them.
  3. Bag food waste for the disposal site, not the rental dumpster.
  4. Keep the contract and residency papers on the seat, out of the trash.

Questions people ask

Does a clean cab matter if the box is clean?

Yes. The rental includes the cab. Bottles, food, and mud on the mats are still a dirty return. Banned items in the footwell are a bigger problem than crumbs. Look there before you walk to the counter, with the light on.

What if I already threw the paperwork away?

Tell the gate or the rental desk before you invent a replacement. A photo may help if you took one earlier. It may not. Next time the folder stays in the cab until the return is finished. Do not dig through the landfill pile for a bill.

Many disposal sites want children and pets to stay in a vehicle or at home. A box truck is a poor place for either while you unload. Read the posted rule and follow it, even if the trip would be easier with company.

Stop Loading When the Truck Sits Low

If the rear bumper is down on the stops or the tires look squat, you are done loading. Remove weight at home. Do not drive an overloaded rental to the scale to see whether the site will shrug.
