No seats means no passengers
The box is a cargo space. It has a floor, walls, and a door. It does not have belts, and it does not have a way for a rider to see a stop coming. Friends who want to hold the load ride in the cab if the rental company allows extra passengers, or they follow in another vehicle. They do not sit on a mattress in the back. That rule applies on the highway and in the disposal lot. A move across the site to the next stall is still a move. Close and latch the door before you release the brake. If someone is still inside arranging a bag, they get out first. The helper who stays in to steady a pile is the injury you were trying to avoid.
The door is closed for the driver's sake too
An open door changes the width of the truck and hides people beside you. It also lets a bag fall into the lane the moment you creep forward. Kick the threshold clear, drop the door, and check the latches. Then walk around. A ramp that is still down is the same class of mistake as a person still in the box. Your guide stands beside the truck, where you can see them, never behind it and never inside it. If the site tells you to pull ahead, do it only after the box is empty of people. Honking is not a reason to roll with the door up because the line is impatient.
What to do instead of a rider
Strap the load so it does not need a human brace. Heavy pieces go against the cab. Light bags go at the door, strapped. Use the tie-downs the truck has. Do not ask someone to sit against a dresser as a human chock. If the load will not stay put, you have too much of it or the wrong arrangement. Fix that in the driveway with the brake set and the engine off, not at speed. At the site, two people on foot unload. They do not ride between the scale and the bay. When you leave, the only things in the box should be the rental's own equipment, stowed. Photograph the empty floor so you know nobody left a tool, and nobody left themselves a place to sit.
Before you go
- Keep every person in the cab with a belt, or in a following car.
- Close and latch the cargo door before the truck moves at all.
- Strap the load so nobody has to brace it by riding.
- Walk around and confirm the box and the ramp are clear before you roll.
Letting a helper ride in the box to hold the load for a short drive.
Questions people ask
Is it allowed if the door stays open and we go slowly?
No. Slow and open is still a person in a space with no seat. Close the door and put people in the cab. The lot is not a different set of rules from the road. If the cab is full, the extra person waits on foot until the truck is parked.
What if a child climbed in while I was at the window?
Stop. Get them out before the truck moves. Check the box every time, not only at the start of the day. The cargo area is not a play space at the landfill. Follow the site's rule on children, which often means they stay home.
Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
