Rules
From the rules page:
- Proof of residency or taxpayer status is required. A driver's license, utility bill, tax receipt or vehicle registration tied to a Madison property all work.
- No contractors.
- One trip a day, up to what fits in a standard pickup bed or a 5-by-8-foot trailer. Oversized loads are turned away. The city suggests the Dane County Landfill for big volumes.
- Self-service. Attendants can't help unload.
- Long lines can mean being turned away before posted closing.
Who pays item fees
If the City of Madison collects your recycling, item fees are covered by the Resource Recovery Special Charge on your water bill. If not, you have to buy a fee sticker online or at the Streets East or West office before your visit. Per the items-with-fees page, fees are $35 for large appliances (fridges, washers, water heaters, hot tubs), $15 for items like lawn mowers, microwaves and gas grills, and $5 to $10 per tire. Size your load with estimating cubic yards.

- AmazonCommercial heavy-duty 16-mil poly tarp: Covers the load so nothing blows out on the highway, and helps you avoid the uncovered-load fee many sites charge.
- Rhino USA 1-inch ratchet tie-down straps (4-pack): Holds the tarp and bulky items like furniture in place in a pickup bed or trailer.
- Wells Lamont 3300 leather-palm work gloves: Most drop-off sites are self-unload, so protect your hands from splinters, nails and sharp edges.
Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
