Ask what counts before you dig through a drawer
Sites that serve a city or county ask for proof because the fee sheet and the gate rule depend on it. A driver's license is common and not universal. Some want a current utility bill, a tax bill, or a lease. Some want the document to show the same name as the driver. Call and ask what they will accept on the day you go. Ask whether a passenger's proof counts if the driver just moved. Ask whether a PO box is enough. Write down the answer. A first visit is the wrong time to test a blurry photo of a bill on a phone unless they said a phone photo is acceptable.
Bring the original they described
Put the document in the cab, not in a box under the debris. If your license has an old address, bring the second document they named. If you are hauling for a parent who lives in the area and you do not, ask whether the resident must be in the vehicle. Many sites require the resident to be present or require the waste to come from inside the area with proof of that address. Do not borrow a neighbor's bill. If you cannot meet the rule, ask whether an out-of-area visit is allowed at the other rate instead of being turned away.
Show it at the window, then put it away
Hand the proof over when the attendant asks, and wait while they read it. Have the vehicle registration ready if they also ask where the truck is from. When they hand the documents back, put them in the cab before you drive to the bay. You will be out of the truck to unload, and a license left on the seat is easy to lose. If they refuse the proof, ask what is missing. If you can fix it the same day, do that. If you cannot, take the load home. Do not unload while the classification is still disputed.
Before you go
- Call and ask which documents prove residency at that site.
- Bring those documents in the cab, including a second proof if your license address is old.
- Ask whether the resident must be in the vehicle.
- Show the proof at the window and wait for the attendant to accept it before you unload.
Arriving with only a mailed advertisement and expecting it to prove you live in the county.
Questions people ask
Does a rental agreement work?
Ask that site. Some accept a current lease and some want a utility bill in your name. Bring what they named, not what worked in another county.
I live here but my license is from another state. What should I bring?
Call first. A new resident often needs the extra document they specify. Do not assume the out-of-state license is enough or that it automatically makes you a non-resident.
Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
