Loose Tires in a Rental Truck

Tires roll. Stand them in a row and strap them, and ask the site about its tire limit before you load a pile. A rental truck full of tires can look like a commercial hauler even when the tires came from your own garage.

They will not stay where you set them

A loose tire in a box becomes a moving circle the first time you brake. Stand tires in a row, touching, and strap the row to the truck's tie-downs. Do not leave one on its side under bags where it can climb the pile. Call the site before you load and ask whether tires are accepted, how many a resident may bring, and whether a rental truck changes that answer. Some sites take a few passenger tires and refuse a truck that looks like a tire business. Ask that site. Do not invent a limit. Dumpmapper can show candidate facilities. A pin is not permission, and it will not tell you the tire rule for today.

A full box reads as a hauler

Lettering, a long box, and a cargo area of nothing but tires can move you to a commercial conversation even if every tire came off a family car. Describe the load when you call: how many, what size, and whether they are on rims. Rims may be a scrap-metal question separate from the rubber. Ask. Keep household trash out of the tire row so one mixed pile does not set the whole visit. There is no national tire fee to quote here. Read that site's sheet or ask at the window. If they say no, the tires leave with you. Do not drop them on the shoulder, in the woods, or in the rental company's dumpster.

Unload without letting them bounce into the lane

Open the door from the side. A strap that came loose means a tire is leaning on the door. Two people roll them down the ramp one at a time, or lift them if the site wants them carried. Do not kick a stack off the back. At the pile, set them where you are shown and do not wander the floor stacking other people's tires. Sweep the box for tread dirt and stones at the site. Check your own truck tires for screws before you leave, especially after a load of wheels and debris. Stow the ramp. A tire run is finished when the box is empty and the only rubber left is the rubber that belongs on the axles.

Before you go

  1. Ask the site how many tires a resident in a rental may bring.
  2. Stand them in a row and strap them so they cannot roll.
  3. Keep rims and trash separate if the site says to.
  4. Roll them off one at a time and leave only where you are shown.

Filling the box with loose tires and hoping the gate treats you as a resident with a bag of trash.

Questions people ask

Can I stack tires flat to save straps?

A flat stack still shifts, and the bottom tire can creep. Stand them and strap the row. If you cannot strap them, you have too many for this trip. Take fewer. A rolling tire in a closed box is how the door gets sprung.

What about a tire still full of water?

Water adds weight and dumps on the floor when the tire tips. Drain it at home into a place that is not a storm drain if the water is only rainwater, and ask the site before you bring a tire you cannot lift. Do not cut the tire apart in the truck.
