Lifting Heavy Items with Two People

Two adults can move a heavy piece only when they agree on the lift, the path, and the word for set-it-down. A heroic one-person lift is how dump runs cause injuries.

Agree before anyone bends down

Pick the path from the house to the truck with doors open and the ramp already set. Decide who is at the heavy end. Decide the word that means stop. A sofa, a cast-iron piece, a full file cabinet, or a stack of wet lumber needs that conversation. If you cannot see a safe grip, do not invent one on a sharp edge. Gloves on. If the object is above what the two of you can control, stop and hire help or break the load into real pieces. The site does not require you to arrive hurt.

Lift with legs and a clear drop zone

Bend your knees, keep the load close, and lift together on the count. Do not twist. Walk only as fast as the slower person. The person walking backward needs a clear path and a look over the shoulder before the move starts, not halfway down the steps. Set the load down on the count if anyone stumbles. A controlled set-down is a success. Catching a falling cabinet is how wrists break. On stairs, keep the heavier end uphill if that is the stable orientation for that object, and stop on a landing rather than rushing the flight.

The truck is not a place to collapse

When the piece reaches the bed, slide it instead of throwing it. The second person stays until it is strapped. Do not leave someone holding a corner while you hunt for a strap in the grass. At the disposal site, reverse the plan. If the spotter wants the piece dragged rather than lifted, follow that, because the pit edge is a worse place to be creative. Children are not the second lifter. If your only helper is a child, reschedule.

Before you go

  1. Clear the path and agree on the count and the stop word.
  2. Lift together with the load close, and set it down if anyone slips.
  3. Slide the piece into the bed and strap it before anyone lets go.
  4. Use adults only, and hire help if the piece is beyond the two of you.

Starting up the steps before the person walking backward has seen the landing.

Questions people ask

Is a furniture dolly better than a lift?

Yes when the ground is flat and the piece is strapped to the dolly. Stairs still need a plan or a different crew.

What if my back already hurts?

Do not test it on a disposal day. Ask another adult or hire movers. A dump ticket is cheaper than an injury.
