Disposing of Untreated Lumber Scraps

Untreated, unpainted lumber may qualify as clean wood. Nails, paint, and any treatment can move it into a different pile, so ask before you mix the load.

Clean wood has a narrow definition

Sites that chip or recycle wood usually want lumber that is untreated, unpainted, and free of glue-heavy products. Plain pine or fir offcuts from a project can fit. Plywood, particle board, and OSB often do not, because of glues. Painted trim does not. Pressure-treated boards do not. When you call, list what you actually have instead of saying wood. If the site accepts clean lumber in a separate area, keep that pile honest. One painted board can get the load sent to trash.

Nails and length limits

Pull nails or bend them flat if the site requires it for the grinder's safety. A board with a hanger embedded in it is a projectile inside a chipper. Ask about maximum length. Long studs may need to be cut in the driveway so they fit the container. Sawdust and shavings from untreated wood may be accepted with the boards or may be refused if they are bagged in plastic. Ask. Do not mix sawdust from a treated deck into the same bags.

Keep a trash pile beside the clean pile

In a real garage you will find a painted shelf board, a strip of treated stake, and a clean 2x4 in the same corner. Sort them before you drive. The clean 2x4 can go to the wood program if the site said yes. The other pieces follow the trash or treated-wood instruction. On the truck, load clean wood where the attendant can see it. At the bay, unload only in the clean-wood area. If a worker pulls a painted piece out of your pile, apologize and take it to the bay they name.

Before you go

  1. Sort untreated, unpainted boards away from painted, glued, and treated wood.
  2. Ask the site whether your clean scraps qualify and what length they allow.
  3. Pull or flatten nails if the grinder rule requires it.
  4. Unload clean wood only in the assigned wood area.

Questions people ask

Is plywood clean wood?

Often no, because of the glue. Call and ask about plywood specifically. Do not assume it follows the same rule as a plain pine board.

Can I burn untreated scraps in a backyard pit?

Local burn rules vary, and many neighborhoods ban open burning. Disposal or a permitted wood program is the reliable path. Do not burn painted or treated pieces.
