Disposing of Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers are dense inert pieces if they are clean. Knock off the sand, ask whether the site takes them with rubble, and do not mix in plastic edging.

Clean pavers versus a mixed patio pile

A concrete paver is small, heavy, and usually welcome in an inert or concrete pile only when it is free of plastic, wood, and soil. Call the site and ask whether pavers are accepted as clean concrete, whether clay brick pavers are a different pile, and whether polymeric sand still stuck to the sides is a problem. Clay brick is not concrete. Say which one you have. Plastic edging, geotextile, and landscape fabric must come off and go to trash. They are not rubble. A pallet of unused pavers may be returnable to the supplier or useful to a neighbor. Make that call before you pay to tip a new pallet. Do not dump pavers on a vacant lot. That is not a disposal site.

Stack them so the tailgate can still open

Pavers seem tidy until the stack shifts and pins the tailgate. Stack them tight against the cab, in a low course, and strap the stack. A loose paver becomes a projectile. Sand and chips should be swept into a bag or into the pile the site allows, not left to pour out on the road. If the pavers are stuck together with a thick bed of asphalt or construction adhesive, tell the site. That is no longer a clean paver. Do not claim it is. Edging spikes go in a jar. They are metal, small, and fond of hiding in the sand. Your back will care more about trip count than the pavers will. A half bed of pavers can be a full payload.

Unload into the inert bay only

Tell the scale house you have clean concrete pavers or, if true, pavers still stuck to plastic grid. Those are different. Unload where inert material is assigned. Do not toss pavers into the brush because the site was busy. If the attendant finds fabric in the pile, you will be picking pavers back out. Set them down. Do not throw them at the concrete chunk already in the bay. A thrown paver chips and rolls into the driving lane. When the bed is empty, sweep the sand back into the bay you were given or into a bag if they asked you not to leave fines on the floor.

Before you go

  1. Ask whether clean concrete pavers are accepted with inert rubble.
  2. Remove plastic edging, fabric, and loose metal spikes.
  3. Stack and strap the pavers low, and watch the truck's payload.
  4. Unload in the inert bay and sweep sand back into that pile if staff allow.

Questions people ask

Are clay brick pavers concrete?

No. Tell the site you have clay brick if that is what the patio is. Some rubble piles accept both, and some do not.

Can I reuse chipped pavers at home?

Yes, if you want them for another project on your property. Cracked pavers you do not want still follow the inert-pile rule the site gave you.
