Disposing of a Kitchen Range

A kitchen range needs a safe gas or electric disconnect before it moves. Empty it, keep the oven door latched, and confirm whether the site wants it as scrap or as trash.

Disconnect fuel or power the right way

A gas range is tied to a fuel line, and an electric range is tied to a high-voltage cord or a hard-wired connection. Have a qualified person disconnect the gas and cap the line, or disconnect the electric supply, before you slide the unit out. Do not cut a gas connector to save a trip, and do not leave an open gas valve behind the stove. Once service is off, pull the range straight out so you do not crush the connector you already removed. Remove racks, the storage drawer, and any broiler pan. Grease left in a drawer is ordinary kitchen waste once it is solid enough to bag. Do not pour grease into a storm drain. The anti-tip bracket on the floor can stay or go, but do not leave its screws scattered on the kitchen floor.

What the site is actually accepting

Call a scrap yard and the disposal site. Many ranges are mostly steel and are welcome as scrap if the unit is empty and disconnected. Some yards refuse ovens because of glass, insulation, and the electronics in the console. A transfer station may accept the whole range as bulky trash. Say whether it is gas or electric, and say that the fuel or power is already disconnected. A range is not a refrigerant appliance by itself. If you are also removing a separate mini-split or a refrigerator, those are a different trip with a certified recovery rule. Do not put a range on the curb for scavengers unless your community bulky program told you to.

Keep the door shut on the ride

Tape or latch the oven door so it cannot swing open and break the glass on a curb. The cooktop glass, if you have a smooth top, is easy to crack if you lay tools on it. Set the range upright in the bed, strap it high and low, and keep racks in a box so they do not bounce into the glass. Use two people. A range that tips off a tailgate lands on whoever is guiding it. At the site, wait for the appliance or scrap bay. If staff want the door glass or the cord handled a certain way, follow that. Sweep screws and a fallen grate before you drive off.

Before you go

  1. Have a qualified person disconnect the gas and cap the line, or disconnect the electric supply.
  2. Remove racks and pans, and bag solidified grease instead of pouring it out.
  3. Ask whether the range should go to a scrap yard or to bulky trash.
  4. Latch the door, strap the unit upright, and unload in the assigned bay.

Cutting the gas connector yourself and leaving an uncapped line behind the cabinet.

Questions people ask

Should oven racks be recycled separately?

If a scrap yard wants clean steel, a rack can ride with other metal. Keep it boxed until you know, so it does not shatter the oven glass in transit.

What about the flexible gas line I removed?

Cap the house side. Ask the site or the yard whether the used connector is accepted with the appliance or should be discarded as scrap metal.
