Do not cut lines to hurry the pull
A gas furnace connects to fuel, venting, and electricity. A furnace or air handler with an air-conditioning coil also holds refrigerant. Have a qualified person shut off and disconnect the gas and electrical service. If a refrigerant coil is attached, only a certified technician may recover the refrigerant. Do not cut refrigerant lines, do not vent them, and do not loosen fittings to see what happens. The same stop rule applies if you are unsure whether the cabinet is a furnace, an air handler, or a combined unit. Leave the coil intact until someone certified says the charge is recovered. Flue pipe can be sharp and sooty. Bag screws and keep the pipe from swinging loose once a professional has disconnected it.
The cabinet is metal only after it is safe
Once the unit is disconnected and any refrigerant has been recovered, you can talk about the empty cabinet as scrap or as bulky waste. Call the yard or the disposal site and say the furnace is disconnected, drained of condensate, and that refrigerant recovery is already done if a coil was present. Some yards want motors and copper set aside. Some want the cabinet whole. Do not strip a unit that still has a charged coil. Condensate in the pan should be emptied in a utility sink, not carried as a sloshing tray in the truck. Filters go in the trash unless the site tells you otherwise. Do not leave a furnace in the alley because it is mostly steel.
Move a dead weight with a plan
Furnace cabinets are dense, tall, and eager to tip. Dolly the unit with a second person, and strap it in the truck low and upright if it will fit that way. If it must lie down, confirm there is no remaining liquid in the pan and that the technician has cleared that position. Block the cabinet so it cannot roll into the cab. Wear gloves. Sheet metal edges where screws came out will cut. At the site, unload in the scrap or bulky bay you were given. If an attendant sees an attached coil with cut lines, expect the load to be refused. Take it back to a certified technician rather than arguing at the bay.
Before you go
- Have a qualified person disconnect gas, vent, and electrical service.
- If an AC coil is attached, have a certified technician recover the refrigerant before any move.
- Call the scrap yard or disposal site and describe the unit as already disconnected.
- Dolly and strap the cabinet, then unload it in the assigned bay.

Questions people ask
Is a heat-only furnace a refrigerant appliance?
Not if it has no cooling coil and no refrigerant lines. If you see a coil and copper lines, treat it as a refrigerant unit and wait for certified recovery.
Can I recycle the flue pipe with the cabinet?
Ask the yard. Thin vent pipe is a different metal and may need to be separated. Keep the sooty pieces from smearing the rest of the load.
