Water first, and only in a legal way
Thousands of gallons cannot go into a neighbor's yard, a septic system, or a storm drain just because the pool is in the way. Ask your local public works or sewer utility how a residential pool may be emptied. Some places want chlorine to dissipate first and want the water on your own lawn, slowly. Follow that local instruction. Do not open a wall and flood the street. After the water is gone, remove pumps, filters, and heaters as separate appliances. If a heater or heat pump contains refrigerant, a certified technician has to recover it. Do not cut the lines.
Liner, wall, and frame are different
The vinyl liner is bulky plastic. Dry it, fold it, and ask the disposal site whether it is construction debris or trash. The steel or resin wall and the frame may be scrap or bulky metal. Rails full of screws should be bundled. Sand or foam-block bottoms, if you have them, are yet another material. Ask about each. A deck built around the pool is a lumber project of its own. If that lumber is pressure-treated, do not describe it as clean yard waste. Ask the site before you mix it into the pool load.
Stage the haul in piles
You will probably not fit a whole pool in one safe trip. Make a liner pile, a metal pile, and a trash pile in the driveway. Cover the liner so it does not hold rain. Watch for sharp wall edges and strap bundles so they cannot slide. At the scale house, describe the trip you actually brought: liner only, or metal only. A mixed surprise is how loads get rejected. If the attendant sends metal to one bay and plastic to another, do both. Do not dump the liner on the scrap pile because the line was shorter.
Before you go
- Ask how pool water may be emptied before you drain it.
- Have a certified technician recover refrigerant from any heater that has it.
- Separate liner, frame, and treated wood, and confirm where each goes.
- Haul inspectable loads and unload in the bays you are given.

Questions people ask
Can the pump go in scrap metal?
Ask the yard. Motors and housings are mixed materials. Drain water first. Do not include a refrigerant heat pump in a scrap load.
Is the sand from a sand filter clean fill?
No. Filter sand can be contaminated with pool debris. Bag it and ask the site. Do not dump it in a garden as fill.
