Which Beck Landfill this is

People searching Beck Landfill almost always mean the locally owned site that serves the San Antonio construction market, not a city dump for kitchen bags. The operator describes it as the only locally owned and operated landfill in the San Antonio area, and as a Type IV landfill. Type IV, in Texas terms, is a construction-and-demolition facility. That single fact saves a wasted trip: regular household garbage, food waste, and anything that rots is refused. The gate is the blue metal gates just north of Randolph Air Force Base. Follow them to the scale house. The published phone is 210-658-6321. Hours posted on the operator site are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., closed most major holidays.

What the operator says it will take

Accepted loads are construction and demolition debris such as lumber, metal, drywall, glass, plastic, cardboard, and roofing, plus inert material such as clean soil, concrete, gravel, brick, asphalt, and rock. Yard waste and brush are accepted when they are free of household trash. The site also lists cloth, furniture, unsoiled mattresses with a limit of two, box springs, carpet, rugs, incandescent bulbs, appliances that do not contain refrigerant, and paint cans that are empty or fully dried. Separated, uncontaminated wood can be processed for recycling. Separated scrap metal and non-CFC appliances are taken for recycling. Tires are refused unless the sidewalls are cut down to the top of the tread or the tire is quartered.

What gets turned around

Hazardous waste, asbestos-contaminated waste, ordinary household or food waste, liquids, chemicals, pesticides, oil, and wet paint are prohibited. So are batteries, engines, televisions, refrigerators and air conditioners that still hold refrigerant, medical waste, and dead animals. If a load is at least about 30 percent asphalt shingles by the scale house's judgment, it is priced as a shingle load, not as ordinary debris. The operator posts a $300 minimum for shingle loads up to the stated weight break and $150 a ton after that, and it requires an ID, a card, and $300 cash left at the scale house before a shingle load goes to the face. Read the current sheet. Those figures were on becklandfill.com when this page was written.

Before you go

  1. Confirm the load is construction debris, inert fill, or clean brush, not household trash.
  2. Pull out refrigerators, air conditioners, TVs, batteries, wet paint, and liquids before you leave home.
  3. Tarp the load. The operator posts a $25 untarped-load fee and says bulky pieces may be strapped instead.
  4. Call 210-658-6321 if the load is mostly shingles, because that price and the cash hold are different.

Showing up with household garbage because the word landfill sounded like the city dump. This site is Type IV. Kitchen trash does not belong here.
