Austin Recycle and Reuse Drop-Off Center: Appointments, Items and Fees

Austin's Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center is where residents take the items that can't go in a cart, such as paint, batteries, chemicals, electronics and appliances. It's appointment-only and isn't a trash dump.

The basics

The center is at 2514 Business Center Drive, Austin, TX 78744, and is open by appointment only. Book through the Austin Recycles app or the city website, as described on the City of Austin Recycle and Reuse Center page. Appointments can't be changed once booked. Cancel and rebook instead.

Use is free for Austin and Travis County residents, and fees apply if you live elsewhere. The city's Austin Resource Recovery administrative rules call for a photo ID and a current City of Austin or Travis County utility bill from the past 90 days. Travis County residents without city utilities can use another utility bill. When a fee applies, the rules say payment is by debit or credit card only, with no cash.

Checked October 2026. Hours, fees, residency rules and accepted items change, sometimes with little notice. Call the site or check its official page before you load up.

Household hazardous waste

Accepted items include aerosol cans, automotive fluids and oil filters, car and household batteries, cleaning products, cooking oil, fluorescent bulbs, mercury, paint and thinners, pesticides, pool chemicals and propane cylinders. Not accepted: business waste, explosives (including ammunition), radioactive materials, syringes and medical waste.

Bring products in their original containers, don't mix them, use containers of 5 gallons or less, and pack them upright in sturdy boxes rather than trash bags. The administrative rules allow residents up to 30 gallons of liquid hazardous waste at no extra cost. More than that may be charged at cost. Related: antifreeze, aerosol cans, light bulbs.

Electronics, appliances and recyclables

The center takes air conditioners, computers, printers, TVs, microwaves, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, lawn mowers, exercise equipment, scrap metal, cardboard, clean and dry plastic film and foam (no packing peanuts), clothing and housewares, playground equipment, and solar panels and battery storage systems.

Tires are accepted for a fee of $6 per tire.

What it won't take

Furniture, mattresses, non-recyclable trash, packing peanuts, toilets, and brush or yard trimmings. The city sends brush to Austin Water's Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant, which doesn't need an appointment. For trash and furniture, you'll need curbside bulk collection or a landfill. The Dumpmapper map lists nearby sites, and the dump fee calculator estimates gate fees.

The center also runs a free ReUse Store for items others have dropped off, and gives away free mulch you load yourself.

The bottom line

Book a slot, bring ID and a recent utility bill, and pack chemicals upright in boxes. Leave trash and furniture for curbside bulk pickup or a landfill. See what counts as household hazardous waste.

Hauling it yourself? If the load won’t fit in the truck bed, a 6×10 ft open-rail utility trailer or a 4×8 ft folding trailer (it folds upright to store in a garage) can cost less than a couple of hauler trips. Tie everything down with ratchet tie-down straps; many sites charge extra for loose or uncovered loads.
