Weather Closures at Disposal Sites

Wind, ice, fire danger, and floods can close a site even when the calendar says open. Check that morning, and do not treat a closure as optional because the drive to the gate looked fine.

Ask on the morning you plan to go

A listing published last week cannot see today's wind or ice. Call the site or check the alert method they told you to use. Ask whether they are receiving your vehicle type. Some closures are complete. Some pause only the public unloading area. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city to be sure you are calling the right facility. Listings can be out of date, so a weather closure is exactly the kind of change a map will miss. If you cannot confirm, keep the load at home. A closed site is not a self-serve drop.

Follow the closure even if the gate looks ajar

Staff may be on site for maintenance while the public is closed. A moving loader and an open padlock are not an invitation. Obey the sign and the person at the entrance. If a road to the site is blocked by flood or debris, do not go around on a haul road. Turn back. Ask later where storm debris, if that is what you have, is supposed to go. Ordinary household waste usually waits for the ordinary reopening. Storm programs, when they exist, are announced. Do not invent one.

Reopening is a new confirmation

When the weather passes, call before you haul. Backlogs, shorter hours, or a damaged entrance can follow a closure. Ask whether appointments are required for a few days. If a listing still shows a routine day, trust the site and send a correction only if the standing hours are wrong. A one-day weather closure does not always belong on a permanent listing. Your note can say what staff told you and the date. Then plan the trip for a confirmed open day.

Before you go

  1. Call the morning of the trip if wind, ice, fire danger, or flooding is forecast.
  2. Treat an unconfirmed day as closed for your planning.
  3. Do not enter because the gate is open if staff say the public is closed.
  4. Call again before the next attempt. Do not assume the following morning is normal.

Questions people ask

Are weather closures posted only on social media?

Use the method the site told you to use. If you do not know it, call. A repost from a neighbor is a lead. Staff are the confirmation.

Can high wind close only tall vehicles?

It might. Ask about your vehicle. A closure for high trailers and a closure for everyone are different. Do not generalize from the truck ahead of you.

Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
