The trailer is its own question
A site that welcomes your car may still limit trailers by length, by height of the load, or by whether the trailer is a rental. Call and describe the trailer, the tow vehicle, and the debris. Ask whether the combination stays in the resident lane or moves to another scale. Some convenience centers take short trailers and refuse anything longer. Ask for the limit in words they use, and ask which entrance to use. Dumpmapper can show candidate facilities. A pin is not permission, and it will not tell you the trailer rule. Bring the rental contract for the trailer and your residency proof, because the plate on the trailer may not match your town.
Tarp, lights, and the rails
An open trailer load should sit below the rails and under a tarp. Debris stacked above the sides becomes highway litter, and a second trip is the legal fix. Tie the tarp to the trailer's tie-downs. Do not drill new holes. Sites can refuse or turn around an untarped open load, so secure it before you leave the driveway. Check lights and the coupler at the rental lot and again before the highway. A swinging tailgate is how a bag becomes litter. At the site, shake the tarp into the bay and take the tarp home. Do not leave it in the bed or in the rental lot. Sweep the deck at the disposal site. Ordinary dry sweepings belong in the bay, not in a storm drain.
Rate class and a clean return
Ask whether adding a trailer changes the fee class even when the car is a resident vehicle. Do not invent the fee, and do not assume the car rate still applies. Unload only on the floor you are shown. If staff want yard waste, metal, and trash in different piles, load the trailer so the first pile is at the rear. Last on, first off. Look at the tires for screws before you leave the site. Return the trailer empty: no lumber ends, no pallet, no bag you meant to grab later. Latch the gate. Photograph the empty bed so the return conversation is about a trailer you can show, not about a story.
Before you go
- Call the site about trailer length, the tow vehicle, and which entrance to use.
- Keep the load below the rails and tarp it to the trailer's own tie-downs.
- Ask whether the trailer changes the rate class before you tow it over.
- Sweep and photograph the empty trailer at the site, then return it empty.

Questions people ask
Do I need the trailer contract at the gate?
Bring it. Staff may ask who the trailer belongs to, and the plate will not answer that. Your license and the residency proof the site named should be in the tow vehicle too. Keys alone are a weak explanation when the agreement is sitting at home.
Can yard waste and trash share the trailer?
Only if that site accepts them together. Many places sort brush from household trash. Load so you can reach the first pile without digging, and ask before you mix. A mixed load is often handled as the stricter material. There is no universal price. Read that site's sheet.
