Do not assume the truck rule covers the trailer
You can be welcome in your own car and still be turned away because of the trailer behind it. Length, height, rental status, and whether the trailer is open or enclosed are all part of the question. Call the transfer station and describe the trailer, not just the car. Ask which entrance takes trailers and whether a rental plate changes anything. A convenience center and a transfer station in the same area can disagree, so ask the place you will enter. Dumpmapper can help you find candidate stations. A map pin is not permission, and it may be the car loop rather than the trailer lane you were told to use.
Length, tarp, and the coupler
Ask for the length they allow and compare it to the trailer on the contract, not to a guess from the lot. An open trailer needs a tarp tied to its own points, with the load below the rails. An enclosed trailer needs a height check against canopies and wires. Confirm lights and the coupler before you leave the rental lot. At the station, stop at the window and wait for a bay. Do not swing a long trailer through a car stall because the lane looked empty. If the approach is tight, ask for another stall. Unload only on the floor you are shown. Shake the tarp into the bay and take it home.
Papers and a clean deck
Bring the trailer contract and your residency proof. The trailer plate will not match your town any more than a truck plate would. If the site wants the renter present, the person named on the agreement should be there. Sweep the deck at the station. Ordinary dry sweepings go in the bay, not into a storm drain and not back to the rental lot. Check the tires for screws before you tow away. Return the trailer empty, with the gate latched and no strap left hanging over the plate or the lights. Photograph the empty bed so the return is a record, not a debate later at the return counter.
Before you go
- Call the transfer station about rental trailers, length, and the entrance.
- Tarp an open load below the rails, or check height on an enclosed trailer.
- Bring the trailer contract and your residency proof to the window.
- Sweep the deck at the station and return the trailer empty.

Questions people ask
Are trailer rules the same as box-truck rules?
No. A site can accept one and refuse the other. Ask about the trailer you will tow, including length and whether it is open or enclosed. A yes for your car, or a yes for a rental truck, does not answer the trailer question. Call that station.
What if the trailer is over their length limit?
Do not try to talk a too-long trailer into a short stall. Ask whether another entrance or another facility takes that length. If not, return the trailer and use a shorter one or a vehicle they allow. Do not unhitch it on the shoulder and unload into the weeds.
